Americans win pair in Zona

After losing a shootout to Arizona last Wednesday, 3-2, the Allen Americans took the three-game series with 7-1 and 3-2 wins against the Sundogs over the weekend.

The victories keep the Americans atop the CHL standings at 12-2-1 (25 points).

Friday's win was an all-out blitz as Allen got goals from Brett Skinner (2), Daryl Bootland (2), Scotty Howes, Mike Montgomery and Jamie Schaafsma in a 7-1 triumph. Bootland and Howes each had five-point nights with the former registering three helpers and the latter four.

Skinner's 20 points is tops in the league among defensemen.

Saturday's game was significantly closer, but Americans netminder Aaron Dell (5-2) picked up his second win in two nights by turning away 40 of the Sundogs' 42 shots. Dell has the best goals against average (1.89) and save percentage (.936) in the CHL.

The Americans and Sundogs play again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday from the AEC, but not before Allen travels to face the Tulsa Oilers at 7:35 p.m. Friday.

Sidekicks improve to 2-0

It was 22 days between the Dallas Sidekicks' first and second games.

They didn't miss a beat, following a 6-2 season-opening home win over the Harrisburg Heat with a 7-3 road thrashing of the Rio Grande Valley Flash.

Jamie Lovegrove scored the third-fastest goal in franchise history and gave Dallas a lead 23 seconds in. The Sidekicks never looked back with additional goals from Renato Pereira, Frank Mbemba, Ricardinho and Carlos Videla (2). Rio Grande Valley also contributed an own goal.

That was plenty for Dallas keeper Sagu, who accounted for 34 saves in the 7-3 win.

Rio Grande Valley and Dallas rematch at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the Flash traveling to the AEC. The game will be broadcast by Norm Hitzges and former Sidekicks head coach Gordon Jago on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel 185.

Leopards even through four

The Lovejoy boys basketball team has bounced between wins and losses thus far.

In Tuesday's case, it was the positive end of that trend with the Leopards getting back to .500 (2-2) via a 70-62 decision over Trinity Christian-Addison.

Lovejoy put TCA in a 23-13 hole after one quarter and extended its lead to as much as 52-36 after three frames. Senior Trevor Eckard led all Leopards with 22 points while senior Chris Ford and junior Jordan Reed each chipped in 10.

The Leopards' early-season potential has them slotted at No. 23 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Class 4A state poll.

Lovejoy returns to action at 5 p.m. today against Waco Midway to open the Grapevine Tournament.

Lovejoy girls right the ship

After dropping its last two games and seven of eight overall, the Lovejoy girls basketball team returned to the win column Tuesday.

The Lady Leopards beat Melissa, 48-37.

That was an improvement over a 68-47 setback to Rockwall last Tuesday. Junior Shani Rainey led the team with 19 points and was the only scorer to break double figures with junior Cassie Conarty and freshman Sarah Langs each contributing six points.

The Lady Leopards (3-8) return home Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Flower Mound.

Quest, Cherry named Coach of the Year

Lovejoy's Adam Cherry and Allen's Justin Quest have been named Texas Tennis Association Coaches of the Year for 2011-12.

Cherry won for Class 3A and Quest for 5A.

Both coaches have continued their success into the fall.

Moving up to 4A, Cherry led Lovejoy to an undefeated district regular season, second-place finish at the district tournament and fifth-place showing at regionals.

Quest helped navigate Allen through one of the toughest district in the state with the Eagles falling one victory short of the regional tournament.

"It's nice to get some statewide recognition for our program and these kids," Quest said. "Hopefully it speaks to the consistency we have been able to maintain over the past few years."

Both will be honored next month at the Wilson/TTCA Hall of Fame Banquet.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012's official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state's largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West.

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-Aug. 4.
