Longtime McKinney city employee dies; flags flown at half-mast in recognition

Published: Wednesday, December 5, 2012 4:09 PM CST
Flags at McKinney city facilities are flying at half-mast to recognize longtime city employee Cathy Lennox, who passed away early today.

They will remain at half-mast through Saturday.

Mayor Brian Loughmiller offered the following explanation for the decision to lower the flags:

"I am sorry to announce the passing of long time city employee Cathy Lennox after a courageous battle with cancer. Cathy was an employee of the city of McKinney for over 26 years, having served in the city manager's office prior to her working with the McKinney Police Department. Cathy was instrumental in bringing honor to McKinney residents who have family members serving in active duty in the military in areas of conflict by initiating the McKinney Blue Star and Gold Star program. Through Cathy's efforts, the city has paid tribute to families who have lost loved ones in service to our country.

"It is common for the city to recognize the loss of a sworn police officer by lowering the United States flag to half-staff. While Cathy was a civilian employee of the police department, I believe, given her contributions to our police department and our city as a whole, it is fitting to bestow that honor on her as well. With that in mind, I am requesting the city manager to fly the flags at the McKinney Public Safety Building and at City Hall at half-staff in memory of Cathy Lennox as an honor to her family, beginning this afternoon through her memorial service on Saturday.

"Cathy will be missed by all, and my prayers go out to her family at this time."
