11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Rowlett stays perfect on the season

Published: Monday, December 3, 2012 6:40 PM CST
Rowlett knows the chances of finishing the season are slim. But the Eagles are going to enjoy it while it lasts and they extended that feeling last weekend by sweeping four games at the GISD Curtis Culwell Invitational.

Rowlett, which is now 8-0, capped the weekend fun with a 63-55 win over district rival Lakeview on Saturday.

The Eagles jumped out with a 20-9 run in the opening quarter but the Patriots clawed back to within four at halftime.

But behind 20 points from Jeffrey Carroll and 14 from Nathan Hawkins, Rowlett was able to reestablish control in the second half.

That duo was also big in the other game on Saturday, with Hawkins scoring 23 and Carroll adding 14 in a 60-54 win over Plano East. The game was close throughout, but the Eagles took a 31-25 halftime lead and made that margin hold up until the end.

On Friday, Rowlett used a big second half to pull away from Colleyville Heritage in a 57-39 win. The Eagles actually trailed by two at halftime before using a 17-5 spurt in the third quarter to turn the game around. Carroll scored 20 points and Derrick Davis added 13 in the win.

Rowlett had opened the tournament with an easy 69-30 victory against Roosevelt. The Eagles, behind 23 points from Carroll, were dominant in the middle quarters, outscoring Roosevelt 48-13.

Sachse might not be undefeated but it is enjoying a good start of its own, which continued at the GISD Tournament when they won two of three.

The Mustangs downed district rival Naaman Forest on Saturday, outscoring them 34-18 in the second half in a 57-39 win. A.J. Goss had 11 points and Josh Gross added 10 as 10 different players scored.

Sachse's lone slip-up of the weekend of the weekend came on Friday with a 63-59 loss to Lakeview. The Mustangs, who got 15 points from Josh Roberson and 11 from Tyrique Edwards, outscored the Patriots in the second half but it was not enough to offset a 29-21 halftime deficit.

In the tournament opener, Sachse used a 17-6 run down the stretch to storm back to a 46-43 victory over Little Elm.
