Volleyball: Cowgirls outscore Grapevine, 75-22, in first-round sweep

Last season, Southlake Carroll entered the Class 5A playoffs with state title aspirations only to see its season come to an unexpected end in the area round of the playoffs after the Lady Dragons were upset by Grapevine.
On Tuesday, last year's eventual state champ Coppell was hoping to avoid the same fate when they squared off with the Lady Mustangs in the bi-district round of the playoffs at Byron Nelson High School.
But this time there would be no shocker as the Cowgirls cruised past the Grapevine via sweep (25-7, 25-6, 25-9).
Green said she was impressed in particular with Coppell's quick start.
"Our goal was to be consistent and we came out and started with a relentless effort," she said. "That's what I was most pleased with."
Chiaka Ogbogu paced the Cowgirls with 18 kills and 2.5 blocks, while Kylie Pickrell had 16 digs and 34 assists. Coppell also received a balanced effort from Erica Bohanon, who had 15 digs, nine assists, nine kills and two aces, while Mary Kate Marshall chipped in three kills, 1.5 blocks and three aces.
"We didn't have a ton of aces," Green said. "But we did a great job of spot serving."
Coppell advances to the area round for the second consecutive year where they will face the winner of Tuesday's matchup between Killeen Harker Heights and Midlothian (results not available as of press time).
"The girls knew it was a playoff game and that no matter the opponent, they have to show up and play," Green said. "We're happy to get the first one out of the way and now we're preparing for our next opponent."
Last Tuesday, Coppell locked up the District 5-5A title when they swept Lewisville (25-17, 25-14, 25-9).
"With the playoffs starting right after the regular season ends it can be easy to kind of skim over winning district," Green said. "But we were very excited and I know it was something the girls were wanting. We had talked earlier and they weren't sure when the last time we won district was and for the girls that have been playing since they were freshmen this was big. Considering the district we were in and injuries we had to overcome, I was very impressed and hopefully being in a district of that quality and our strength of schedule will help us."
