Mary Margaret Perryman Rankin

Long-time community and business leader Mary Margaret Perryman Rankin, 91, came to Lewisville with her late husband, James, in 1953 and always said they "bought the only brand-new house for sale in Lewisville on the only block in town with sidewalks, curbs and gutters. It was a Big Deal. We loved it!" Lewisville's population was 1,980.

Services honoring the former banking executive and newspaper editor will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Lewisville's First United Methodist Church, where she was a 50-year member and leader. Family visitation will precede Monday, 6-8 p.m., at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville.

The fourth-generation Texan was born in Montague County, into two pioneer families, the Martin's of Saint Jo, and the Perryman's of Forestburg on Sept. 20, 1921. She is the daughter of Oscar and Margaret Leon Martin Perryman.

Among her many contributions were start-up efforts for:

• Lewisville National Bank, from which she retired as Vice President of Marketing and PR after 20 years, 1983;

• Girl Scouts of America Senior Scout leader and Cross Timbers Council member, 1964-69;

• Lewisville Community Library, Co-Founder;

• Lewisville Resume Club, Charter member/president;

• Lewisville YMCA, co-founder 1962; and

• Lewisville Band Club & Lewisville Athletic Booster Club, charter member.


Honors included: "Woman of the Year" Business & Professional Women's Club of Lewisville, 1967-68; and "Boss of the Year" (Office/Vocational Educational Association of Lewisville High School, 1970-71), and Mother of the Year by the VFW. She held banking certifications from the American Institute of Banking and a Bank Marketing degree/certification from the University of Colorado-Boulder, 1975. She was a 1939 high school graduate in Denton from the North Texas State Teachers College Demonstration School.

Survivors include four children and spouses: Sharon McCown of Denison; Kathy Clark and husband Kent, Lake Dallas; Gary Rankin and wife Lilly, Houston; and Patricia Stone and husband Chuck, Argyle. Eleven grandchildren: Kathryn McCown, Dr. Todd Collins, Ryan Collins, Wade Peterson, Kevin Collins, Marti Rankin Chandler, Grant Peterson, Sean Collins, Carli Rankin, Patrick Lane Peterson, and Kurt Rankin, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions have been requested to the American Cancer Society, where she volunteered for many years.
