McKinney Christian cruises past Gainesville State School

Published: Saturday, November 3, 2012 2:22 AM CDT
McKinney Christian Academy ran past the Gainesville State School Tornadoes 62-0 Friday night in TAPPS Division III District 2 football action. The Mustangs amassed 525 yards of total offense, including 370 yards in the first half.

The Mustangs proved too much to overcome while the Tornadoes fielded only eleven players who played both ways the entire game.

Connor Doyle, who had 271 yards rushing and four touchdowns in the first half alone, led the way for the Mustangs. Doyle started the game's scoring on an 18-yard run that finished off a game-opening 72-yard drive. Caleb Wysong converted the extra point, 7-0 Mustangs.

The Mustangs drove 91 yards on their next possession to score on Nick Weidemann's two-yard dive past the goal line for the 14-0 Mustangs lead.

Doyle would once again get the call as he later scored on a 47-yard romp. Wysong's third straight point after made it 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Doyle would repeat with previous success with another 47-yard run from scrimmage, giving the Mustangs the 28-0 lead.

On Gainesville's next possession, MCA sophomore Isaiah Gore picked off Gainesville quarterback Isaac R. and returned the interception 35 yards for the score. The Tornadoes were soon intercepted again, this time by freshman Jamie Greenwell, who caught the ball at MCA's 28-yard line and returned it to Gainesville's 11-yard line. The return, however, was brought back to the MCA 32-yard line due to an illegal block on the return.

Doyle would continue his strong night and score yet again, increasing the Mustangs dominant lead to 42-0. Greenwell would have one more pick, which he returned to the Tornadoes 41-yard line.

Mustangs freshman Montana Brock scored from there two plays later as MCA took a 49-0 lead into the half.

At halftime, MCA senior fall athletes were honored including football players Kevin Jacobs, Andy and Zach Harrell, and Dallas Brock, who missed the game due to illness. Other athletes honored were Sarah Beach, Mandy Moore, and Mallory Landry for Cheerleading, and Emily Warren for Cross Country.

At the beginning of the second half, Josh Belonga recovered the short kickoff to give McKinney Christian possession at Gainesville's 31-yard line. Brock scored on an eight-yard run. The point after made it 56-0.

Hayden Wyatt's interception and return gave the Mustangs the ball at their own 42-yard line. McKinney later reached the end zone yet again, this time on a 24-yard scoring strike to Will Jacobs.

The score remained 62-0 due to the failed kick. McKinney Christian runs its overall record to 4-5 and improves to 1-2 in district action to keep its hopes alive for a wild card spot in the fast-approaching playoffs. The Mustangs finish off their regular season with a Homecoming game against Coram Deo at 7:30 p.m. Friday at McKinney North.
