This Thanksgiving, DeLay Middle School (DeLay) students gave thanks for having an opportunity to meet Ricardo Villar, a midfield for major league soccer team FC Dallas.
On Nov. 12, Villar visited the school to share his story with students in hopes of inspiring their aspirations. He described his childhood in São Paulo, Brazil where soccer was life and education was limited. Wanting more for himself, he told students what it took to move to the United States, become a Penn State University First Team All-Big 10 athlete, earn his college degree and eventually earn a starting position as a professional soccer player.
His "if I can do you, you can do it" message was simple, but powerful as he is living proof that anything you set your mind to is possible.
"I could see the students relate to him," Principal Jim Baker said. "We tell them everyday they will succeed in life, but hearing it from Ricardo made their dreams more of a reality. He even took time to openly their answered questions. It was a great experience not only for our students, but also for our staff."
