Rowlett looking for young artists to show off talent
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The city of Rowlett is looking for young artists to showcase their work. The city’s arts and humanities commission is hosting its 12th Annual Young Artists Contest and Exhibit. The arts and humanities commission wants to encourage local students to become active in their communities through the visual arts.
“This event encourages all types of art,” said Brenda Kennedy, library administrative assistant.
With that in mind, all young artists, Kindergarten through 12th grade, are invited to participate in the annual contest. The contest will divide the children into three age divisions and two categories, 2D and 3D works, to ensure that each child participating has a chance to compete.
In the past, submissions have varied between 2D and 3D visual arts and have included paintings, drawings, sculpture and ceramics. The commission believes the event gives children the positive reinforcement and encouragement that they need to validate and further their development as young artists. It also encourages parents and community members to be more aware of the visual arts programs in our schools.
“The goal is to encourage the young artists to develop within the visual arts,” Kennedy said.
All entries must be submitted to the Rowlett Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 19 between 1 and 3p.m. for judging at the exhibit. All entries will be on display until Saturday, Feb. 9.
“We are sort of the cultural center for the city,” said Kathy Freiheit, library director. “We think we are the most ideal place for people to come and see it. It’s really a sense of pride for us to be able to showcase the artwork of these young people.”
