Keep on rollin’: Lady Bobcats improve to 10-0 with blowout win

Published: Thursday, December 6, 2012 2:52 PM CST
CELINA – The Lady Bobcats didn’t seem to care that their opponent Tuesday night was a Class 5A school.

Despite the disparity in size, Celina came away with a disparity on the scoreboard by winning a 71-44 home contest against Arlington Bowie.

“We came out and did some good things to start the game,” said Jordan Davis, Celina head coach. “We just got a little sloppy at the end. But overall, I was pleased with what we did.”

Celina was led by junior guard Sarah Cantu, who finished with a game-high 23 points. Sophomore forward Kynese Davis and sophomore guard Alex Jones also tallied double figures on the night, with Davis pouring in 17 and Jones chipping in 13 of her own.

“On a team with no seniors, we need some of the younger players to step up,” Davis said. “These girls have done a great job of that.”

The victory improved Celina’s record to 10-0 after last season’s loss to Abilene-Wylie in the Class 3A State Championship game.

“We’ve had good starts in most of our games,” Davis said. “We just have to keep that up throughout an entire game.”

The Lady Bobcats began the game with an offensive outburst that featured 23 first-quarter points. That dominance gave the team a 23-10 lead entering the second frame, where Celina expanded on its advantage.

“Something we feed on is putting pressure on the other team,” Davis said. “We like to jump on them really quick.”

A 21-12 second quarter gave the Lady Bobcats a 44-22 lead entering the break, largely behind the strong play of Cantu.

“For two years, [Cantu] came off the bench and was a nice spark for us,” Davis said. “She’s finally getting a chance to start and she has really stepped up this year.”

Cantu is one of four juniors on the 2012 roster, with four sophomores making up the remainder of the team.

Celina took its foot off the gas in the second half and outscored Bowie by just five points to come away with a 71-44 victory.

The Lady Bobcats will now take their unbeaten record into the Alvord Tournament tonight, with games scheduled for 7 and 8:15 p.m.

“We’ve played well so far,” Davis said. “We just need to keep it up.”

Following tournament action, Celina returns home for a 6:30 p.m. Tuesday showdown against Plano Senior.
