Game by game: Lady Broncos top Carrollton Ranchview, improve as season deepens

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 9:26 PM CST
Backed by a double-double from senior forward Julia Hendrieth, the McKinney Boyd girls basketball team thoroughly defeated Carrollton Ranchview, 66-45 Friday night at home.

"We're getting better and that's all you can ask for," said Rochelle Vaughn, Boyd head coach. "I told our girls, 'We have to keep working every single day to get better.' It's the little things that we're improving on."

Hendrieth led the way with a game-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds.

"She had a mismatch we tried to exploit with their best player and it worked to our advantage," Vaughn said. "She played real well tonight."

Also contributing strong showings for Boyd was Haley Carruthers, who had 16 points, followed by Mariah Richardson's 8.

"Mariah came in and hit her first couple shots and that's always going to help your confidence," Vaughn said. "Haley also did a great job for us. She was there when we needed her."

Some may view Boyd's 8-9 record with a weary eye, but the Lady Broncos have shown considerable improvement over the last few weeks.

Early struggles in this season's first half have more to do with Boyd's overall record than their current strong level of play.

In just their last two victories alone, the Lady Broncos have won by an average of more than 22 points, beating Lakeview Centennial 57-33 to go with Friday night's 66-45 win over Carrollton Ranchview.

"Our defense is getting better," Vaughn said. "We also did well tonight at making our outside three-point shots. I think at one point we were at 70 percent. We had several girls play well as far as our shooting is concerned."

While come-from-behind victories are always nice, leading from the start is even better, something the Lady Broncos capitalized on Friday night with a 21-11 lead after the first quarter.

"We came out strong," Vaughn said. "We started off pretty well. We got up quick on them and forced them down."

Boyd only has a handful of games remaining before they begin their district slate in early January, something Vaughn said her team is building towards in the best possible way.

"They all did a good job tonight playing hard and playing together," she said. "If we keep getting better every day, we're going to be where we want to be when district starts."

Vaughn has stressed to her girls not to get caught up in any single win, something she believes her team has taken to heart as they continue to get better with every game.

"That's what we preached to our girls tonight," she said. "It was a great win, but we want to keep improving and come back to practice tomorrow, keep getting better and come back ready for Flower Mound Marcus on Tuesday."

With a 13-4 record, Marcus represents one of the best teams Boyd has played all season. It's a challenge the Lady Broncos are eager to accept.

"They're going to be a great opponent," Vaughn said. "They're really good. Their coaches have done a great job. They play with great defensive intensity and I think they've only lost three or four games all year, all to state ranked teams. It will be a good challenge for us and we have that confidence that we can play with anybody."
