FRIDAY'S BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Skeeters stay red hot

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2012 12:31 AM CST
Mesquite had an opportunity on Friday to see just how far it had come in recent weeks.

The Skeeters lost six of their first seven games to start this season, closing out that stretch with a one-point loss to Episcopal School of Dallas.

Mesquite had only lost once since heading into Friday's rematch with ESD and the proof of their progress was on the scoreboard at the end of their 87-73 victory.

The Skeeters got a season-high 40 points from Alex Cooper as they evened their record at 7-7.

Mesquite got off to a sluggish start but kicked it up a notch in the second quarter, outscoring Episcopal 25-12 to take a 41-35 lead into halftime.

The Skeeters pushed the advantage to eight through three quarters and then scored 30 in the fourth to prevent any ESD hopes of a comeback.

In addition Cooper's big night, Rashard Higgins and Javante Wilson each scored 10 points for Mesquite.

The Skeeters' only loss during their last eight games came at the hands of West Mesquite, which continued to play well in improving to 9-3 with a 78-57 victory over Naaman Forest on Friday.

The Wranglers have had to stage a couple of big comebacks already this season, but that was unnecessary against the Rangers. West Mesquite opened a 37-23 halftime lead and scored 29 points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Braylon Rayson scored 21 points to lead the Wranglers, while Nate Davis and Jalen Etienne scored 15 and 13, respectively.

The other local teams were not as fortunate on Friday, as North Mesquite, Horn and Sachse all came up on the short end.

The Stallions fell to 7-5 on the year with a tough 51-49 loss in overtime to Bishop Lynch.

North Mesquite trailed 26-19 at halftime, but allowed only three points in the third quarter to make it close and eventually pulled even at 40-40 to force overtime.

It remained tight in the extra period, but Bishop Lynch was able to do just enough to get the win. Mike Williams led the Stallions with 18 points, while Norman Alexander chipped in with nine.

Horn had a night to forget as it slipped to 3-9 with an 86-35 loss to Cedar Hill. The night started poorly as they fell behind 24-7 and it did not get any better from there.

The Jaguars were outscored by at least 10 points in every quarter and Cedar Hill closed the game with an 18-4 run.

Anthony Sharp scored 11 points and DelMichael High added eight for Horn.

After a good start to the season, Sachse dipped below .500 with a 61-49 loss to Plano West. The Mustangs (5-6) scratched back from an early hole to get to within 28-25 at halftime, but the Wolves opened the second half with a 15-6 spurt and Sachse never recovered.

Jake Goss scored 12 points for the Mustangs.

There is not much action on the schedule for Tuesday, but there are a couple of games involving local teams. North Mesquite will play across town at Poteet, while Mesquite will host Jesuit.
