On the heels of a stout year for Plano sports, here is what just missed the cut for the top 10 sports stories of 2012 (in chronological order):

U.S. blows out Germany
The U.S. National Junior Hockey Team began its campaign in the IIHF World Junior Championship in resounding fashion on Thursday.
The squad, which features Plano native Seth Jones, pieced together an 8-0 shutout of Germany in its opening game of the international competition.
Twelve different players recorded points for Team USA, including two from Jones who posted an assist and scored the team's eighth and final goal.
Teammates Sean Kuraly, Alex Galchenyuk and Reilly Barber combined for three goals and five assists in the win.
"Overall, we played a well-balanced game," said Phil Housley, U.S. head coach. "We got the start we needed to build a good pace and flow to the game. One thing I was really proud of was that when we did have the lead we didn't get away from the team game."
Team USA returned to the ice Friday against Russia (results not available at press time).
Wolves continue surging season
Spirits were high for the Plano West hockey team entering the 2012-13 season and so far things have transpired according to plan.
The Wolves are currently 12-1 in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League for a league-high 24 points.
West opened the season with 12 straight wins before dropping a 5-3 decision to Jesuit on Dec. 20. Prior, the Wolves had outscored opponents, 75-16.
Plano East, which joins the varsity east ranks alongside its city counterparts this season, is currently tied for third place with 16 points (7-4-2). The Panthers have alternated wins and losses over their last five games after starting out the season 5-3.
Not far behind is Plano Senior, which trails the Panthers by two points at 7-6 overall. The Wildcats have won three of their past four games, including a 7-1 blowout of Grapevine/Colleyville on Dec. 20.
All teams return to the ice Jan. 10.
THSBCA Convention and Clinic
The Waco Convention Center will be the site of the 2013 Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Convention and Clinic.
The event is set for Jan. 10-12.
Early registration is available until Dec. 4 at a cost of $65. That price includes membership, clinic fees, liability insurance through THSBCA, a membership card and spot in the 2013 directory.
Regular or on-site registration is $80.

Winter Games of Texas near
For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state's largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.
The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.
Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).
While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion of the competition will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West (4051 Rosemeade Pkwy).
Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-Aug. 4.

DFW Coaches clinic
High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own.
On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers.
Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night "Chalk Talk" and dinner with one of the state's top offensive or defensive minds.
There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday.
The clinic's registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.
THSCEF Leadership Summit
The Texas High School Coaches Education Foundation is teaming with Game Changers for its leadership summit on Feb. 18, 2013.
The event will take place at the AAC.

Burkhead honors rolling in
Nebraska senior Rex Burkhead, a Plano Senior alum, is used to making history.
His latest opportunity came via the field and classroom as Burkhead was the 300th player from Nebraska to be named an Academic All-American.
Burkhead was a repeat first-team pick as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The former Wildcat noted it was "definitely a cool thing" last year when his portrait was added in the hallway outside the Huskers' academic center at Memorial Stadium.
"That was a goal when I came here," Burkhead said. "My parents were big on stressing academics growing up and always putting importance on it.
"It's definitely something I wanted to attain."
Burkhead is a history major with a 3.46 GPA. He also ranks No. 5 on the Huskers' all-time rushing chart (3,189 yards) heading into his final game, the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 vs. Georgia.
Burkhead's week didn't stop there.
Having already been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Burkhead was selected as a team captain during The Home Depot College Football Awards.
The Good Works Team will be recognized at the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
Gentry commits to SMU
Plano West senior Mason Gentry's 2012 campaign marked the first time the defensive end had ever played organized high school football.
There's plenty more to come for the Wolves' defensive standout after committing to SMU on Monday.
Gentry had also received interest from Louisiana Tech and TCU during his recruiting venture, which will end in University Park for the 6-foot-7, 250-pound lineman.
Figueroa returns to cage
For the second straight year, West Plano Crossfit-trained mixed martial artist Edwin Figueroa will be on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card.
Figueroa returns to action for the first time in a year on Feb. 2 when he meets Francisco Rivera at UFC 156 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
A McKinney native, Figueroa competed just once in 2012 -- a split-decision victory over Alex Caceres at UFC 143 during which Caceres was penalized two points for kicks to the groin. The points proved decisive in the decision, with the win upping Figueroa to 2-1 in the UFC and 9-1 overall.
Figueroa was scheduled to fight in June at UFC on FX 4 against Ken Stone but was forced out due to injury.
Jones named U.S. alternate captain
Plano native Seth Jones has been named an alternate captain for the 2013 U.S. National Junior Hockey Team.
Jones joins teammates Cole Bardreau, J.T. Miller and Jacob Trouba as alternates while Jake McCabe was named team captain.
The alternate captains will be split into two pairs, with Jones and Miller wearing 'A' in one uniform color and Bardreau and Trouba sporting the same emblem in a different color.
Jones is familiar with this post, having already served as a co-captain for the 2010-11 U.S. National Under-17 Team and the 2011-12 U.S. National U-18 Team.
Team USA is seeking its third medal in four years at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Russia from Wednesday through Jan. 5.
The U.S. takes the ice tonight at 8 against Germany. The game will be broadcasted on the NHL Network.
