It's no secret that most children love their pets. But just how far will they go to help pets that need their help? In the case of one Frisco Girl Scout troop, a long way.

When Troop 9555, led by Stacy Genovese, began considering what to do for its fall project, one topic quickly sprang to mind: helping animals in need.

"They all wanted to do something that had to do with animals," Genovese said. "Some of the girls' older sisters had done a project with Operation Kindness before, and that really had an impact on the younger girls in the group; they all loved the idea of helping animals. They took my computer, looked up Operation Kindness on their own and found a contact to set up a tour."

Operation Kindness, the oldest and largest no-kill animal shelter in North Texas, was more than willing to help. The shelter suggested creating gift bags that would go to people who adopt rescued animals from the shelter.

To create the bags, the girls first started collecting animal toys and care items.

"The girls did some toy drives already and were able to get some items, and they also raised more than $250 at the Starwood Homeowners Association Christmas party," Genovese said. "We're going until the end of the month so we can help as many animals as possible."

So far, Troop 9555 has collected more than 50 items and $300 for the gift bags, and they're hoping to gain enough items to fill 100 gift bags. Each girl in the troop also saved $10 that will go toward the funds already raised to buy more items at the end of the project.

In addition to collecting items and raising money for the gift bags, the girls created flyers and gone to events and locations in the community to tell people about their project.

Genovese's daughter Julia, a member of the troop, said the project has helped her learn more about how to work with the community to achieve a goal.

"It's been a good experience for me -- I learned about dogs and cats and how to provide things for them as well as how to reach into the community," she said.

To help Troop 9555 reach its goal of 100 gift bags, items may be donated at a drop-off box at Legacy Dance Academy, located at 4040 Legacy Drive in suite 205.
