Home sweet homecoming: Korry and Jamabo lead West past McKinney

MURPHY – Plano West’s homecoming game against McKinney quickly turned into The Korry & Jamabo Show.
Wolves quarterback Travis Korry and running back Sotonye Jamabo combined to have a hand in eight of West’s nine touchdowns en route to a 64-36 win against McKinney on Friday night from Kimbrough Stadium.
“Those young men played outstanding and they’re going to keep getting better and they knew they had to step it up tonight and they did,” said Mike Hughes, West head coach. “It’s a huge win for us. Hopefully as a team we’re peaking at the right time.”
“He’s our leader and our offense is built around him,” Hughes said. “I thought he played well, especially when you consider last week he was injured against Allen.”
Jamabo had 119 yards rushing off 13 carries with two touchdowns in addition to 186 yards receiving off only three receptions that included two more touchdowns.
“He’s an outstanding back and he’s really mature for being a sophomore,” Hughes said. “It’s going to be exciting to watch him over the next few years.”
West improves to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in District 10-5A action with win, while McKinney falls to 5-3 and 1-2. Both McKinney and West spread the wealth around, as seven different players reached the end zone between the two teams in just the first half.
“It was a tale of two halves,” said Jeff Smith, McKinney head coach. “First half we were going toe-to-toe with them and playing them pretty well, but then the first eight minutes of the second half was our demise with turnovers and mistakes. That third quarter was hard on us.”
With five minutes left in the first quarter, Korry connected with receiver Connor Doyle on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Wolves succeeded with the two-point conversion on an Austin Copeland run for the 8-0 lead. Not to be outdone, McKinney would get on the board just 15 seconds later as Jonathan Shannon ran back the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
The Wolves would get right back at it, though. With less than thirty seconds left in the first quarter, Jamabo broke through on third down for a 19-yard scamper into the end zone and a 15-7 West lead.
The Lions quickly scored just 16 seconds after the Wolves did. Connor Fuentes caught a 67-yard reception from Lions quarterback Robert Somborn, shrugging off a tough tackle near midfield for his team's second score of the night.
Somborn completed 23-of-36 pass attempts for 410 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on the night.
McKinney, however, would miss the extra point as the wild first quarter came to an end with West leading 15-13.
Korry would show off his mobility on the next drive, punching in an eight-yard run on a first and goal as the Wolves extended their lead to 22-13 early in the second quarter.
Despite his impressive night, Korry didn’t stop to think about his combined six touchdowns, only focusing on the next play ahead.
“This game was crazy,” he said. “I didn’t keep track of the stats, I was just playing down to down. My team stepped it up so much, we needed it tonight.”
McKinney scored on their next possession as Dalon Willis took in a 45-yard reception, followed by a successful two-point conversion to cut the West lead to 22-21 halfway through the second quarter.
The see-saw affair would momentarily come to a halt as McKinney outside linebacker Matt Reynolds came in for a two-yard run up the middle for the first unanswered, consecutive score of the night for either team. A successful two-point conversion gave McKinney it’s first lead of the night at 29-22.
“For us positively, our kids battled hard, especially in that first half,” Smith said. “We got a lot of weapons and they all stepped up and made plays in the first half.”
West’s offensive prowess couldn’t be bottled for long, though, as Jamabo had a monstrous 80-yard touchdown reception on the Wolves’ next possession. It marked the third time one of the team’s answered the other with an immediate score in the span of 16 or fewer seconds.
Halftime did little to temper West’s offensive firepower, as Jamabo struck again on a six-yard run in West’s opening third quarter drive for the 36-29 lead.
“That set the tone,” Smith said. “It started snowballing on us from there.”
After another score apiece by Jamabo and Korry, Wolves running back Auston Anderson got in on the fun with an 18-yard reception for a 57-29 West lead late in the third quarter. It was the first of two touchdowns for Anderson on the night. With a large lead, Hughes would rest Korry and Jamabo in the fourth quarter.
McKinney returns to action next week at home against Allen, while West travels to Plano Senior.
“We want to keep getting better, we hope this gives us confidence,” Hughes said. “We got to enjoy this tonight and then get back to work tomorrow for next Friday night.”
