Volleyball: Cowgirls finish second in Pearland, Carroll wins in Arlington

Non-district volleyball action continued during the past weekend for Metroplex teams, many of which were partaking in tournaments.
Coppell and Hebron each headed south for the 2012 Nike Pearland Invitational and found success despite competing in a field of 80 teams.
The Cowgirls went 7-1 in the tournament, reaching the finals before coming up short against San Antonio Reagan (29-27, 27-15). Coppell picked up wins over Katy (25-12, 25-12), Elkins (25-14, 25-19), Lake Travis (25-12, 29-27), Dulles (25-20, 25-16), Hebron (25-13, 25-16), Friendswood in the quarterfinals (25-18, 25-17) and San Antonio O'Connor in the semifinals (25-11, 25-13).
"To make the finals in a tournament like that with all of those teams, I was very pleased," said Julie Green, Coppell head coach. "We got a big win over Hebron and played very well against a good Lake Travis team. In the finals, we played a good Reagan team that played with a lot of emotion. They have some big swingers, which is something we typically handle well. We weren't at our best, but at the same time, we hadn't lost a set the whole tournament until that match. We saw a few weaknesses and have some things we need to fine tune."
Hebron, meanwhile, went 5-3. The Lady Hawks opened with consecutive wins against El Paso Coronado (25-17, 9-25, 25-13), Alvin (25-13, 25-15), Cy-Ranch (25-27, 25-23, 25-12) and Round Rock (25-18, 28-26) before dropping its bracket match against Coppell. Following the loss to the Cowgirls, Hebron suffered defeats against Boerne Champion (25-23, 25-15) and Cy-Woods (25-21, 25-18) but bounced back and closed with a win over Plano East (25-20, 23-25, 25-16).
Coppell wasn't the only program to win a tournament as Southlake Carroll took first in the Arlington Tournament. The Lady Dragons won all eight of their matches by sweep, including topping Plano Senior in the finals (25-21, 27-25). Carroll has matched up with the Lady Wildcats in all three of its pre-district tournaments (all wins) and faced Plano in a non-district match.
"I'm glad we don't have to play them anymore," joked Arthur Stanfield, Carroll head coach. "But we played pretty well in the tournament and also played well in a win over Allen on Tuesday. On Saturday, we were able to use four different liberos and they all played pretty well. We got a lot of playing time for a lot of different kids."
Christen Sikora was name MVP of the tournament, while Danielle Proskovec was named Outstanding Offensive Player and Maddie McCollough was selected to the first team.
Carroll opens district at 6:30 p.m. Friday at home against Haltom.
The Colony continued its preparation for district by playing in the Frisco Invitational. After placing third in pool play, the Lady Cougars advanced to the silver bracket where they lost against Byron Nelson and Richardson Berkner but finished with a win against McKinney North.
"We had three weekends in a row with three tournaments," said Terri Harrod, The Colony head coach. "I think the kids are tired and ready for a break. But we're learning very quickly even though we are young. We have to work on scoring in the middle part of the set. We seem to want to take a break and it's difficult for us to come from behind. But we can and have done it to win."
The Colony kicks off District 9-4A competition at 6:45 p.m. Friday at Frisco Wakeland.
Creekview, meanwhile, found plenty of positives in Frisco as well. The Lady Mustangs claimed wins over DeSoto (25-12, 21-25, 25-13), The Colony (25-20, 22-25, 25-15), Keller Fossil Ridge (25-12, 25-17), McKinney (18-25, 25-18, 25-20), Denton (25-10, 25-17) and Frisco (20-25, 25-22, 25-22). Creekview's only loss in the event came against Prestonwood Christian (25-13, 25-18).
The Lady Mustangs get competition in District 10-4A under way at 6:45 p.m. Friday at Terrell, while Newman Smith opens district at the same time when it hosts Highland Park.
