Two Lewisville firefighters and the occupant of a duplex owned by Christian Community Action were rushed to Medical Center of Lewisville following an explosion during the noon hour Friday.
At 2:30 p.m., investigators were not certain that bodies would not be found once the debris is cleared from the duplex in the 500 block of East Main Street.
Lewisville Assistant Fire Chief Brian Freed said Lewisville firefighters were already on the scene Friday morning because Atmos Energy workers were attempting to repair a gas leak.
Officials said one firefighter was treated at the scene and released. As of 4 p.m., another firefighter remained in the hospital. The occupant of the building remained in the hospital in critical condition after being hit by debris.
Officials said no one else was in the building.
Jennifer Ryan, Atmos spokesperson, said crews were working to repair a four-inch gas line about 50 or 60 feet from the duplex when the explosion occurred.
“At this time, all we can say is that our prayers and thoughts are for any of the victims of this incident,” she said.
Ron Batts, CCA president, said the duplex are among 26 units that CCA uses to “offer a hand up but not a hand out” to people who are in financial difficulties. He said he did not know if there are possible other victims in the structure which was demolished by the explosion.
Firefighters from Coppell, Grapevine, Flower Mound and other area cities came to the scene.
Hazel Padron, who lives at the Salvation Army about six blocks west of where the explosion occurred, said she was outside the Salvation Army with others when the explosion occurred.
“We heard a very loud boom, and then we saw gobs of smoke,” she said. “At first, we thought a train had hit a vehicle.”
