10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: West Mesquite has no problems with Poteet
Published: Saturday, January 12, 2013 1:07 AM CST
The old saying goes that records are out the window in rivalry games but West Mesquite was not buying any of that on Friday.
The Wranglers, still steaming from back-to-back district losses, took it out on their opponent for the second consecutive game with a 80-27 victory over the Pirates.
West Mesquite improves to 5-2 in 10-4A in keeping pace with district leaders Carrollton Newman Smith (7-0) and Highland Park (6-1).
Poteet had its two-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 2-5 in district play.
The Wranglers came out looking to end the drama quick and they did so in the first half. Behind 34 points from Alexus Bertrand, West Mesquite started the game on a 23-5 run and stretched the advantage to 39-10 by halftime.
The second half was more of the same, as the Wranglers continued to stifle the Pirate offense, outscoring them 41-17 during the final two quarters.
In addition to Bertrand, Tamia Culligan and Claudia Price were also in double figures with 10 points each.
Poteet was led by Raeghan Shaw with 10 points, with Shyari Cheathem also adding seven.
The Pirates are in for another tough challenge on Tuesday as they must travel to face undefeated Carrollton Newman Smith.
West Mesquite will try to run its winning streak to three when it takes on a Carrollton Creekview team that is hoping to hang onto its position as the fourth playoff team.
