Southbound U.S. 75 lane in McKinney closed indefinitely due to pothole

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 4:11 PM CST
The southbound right lane of U.S. 75 at Eldorado Parkway in McKinney will be closed indefinitely due to a pothole that caused major problems for motorists Wednesday morning.

"It's a specific pothole in one lane on which we've made multiple repairs since 10 p.m. Tuesday night," said Mark Pettit, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) public information officer, Wednesday afternoon. "Continued rain and traffic aren't allowing the repairs to set, and we know the pothole has gotten worse because it's started to cause blowouts and damage to vehicles."

The biggest issues, including at least one blowout, occurred Wednesday morning during rush hour traffic, said Anna Clark, McKinney city spokesperson. At that time, the McKinney Police Department got in touch with the city's Streets Department to see if any temporary patching material was available to quickly cover the pothole, she said.

"They don't obviously want to patch in this kind of weather because it won't stick, but they have temporary materials for emergency situations that will hold for a couple of days," Clark said Wednesday afternoon.

But as heavy rainfall continued, TxDOT, which runs the roadway, decided it was best to shut down the lane until a permanent fixture to the pothole is possible. "With the impending rush hour, we realize the safety issues if we don't keep it closed," he said before the Wednesday afternoon rush hour.

Pettit added that motorists can get off the highway just north of Eldorado and get back on just south of it, but stressed that staying on the highway may be a better option because "the frontage roads are suffering (from the weather) as well."

The lane's closure will remain intact until the weather clears up, likely by tomorrow morning when sunshine is in the forecast.

"It'll be closed until we get a significant break in the rain," he said. "As much as we need the water, it's been wreaking havoc on the roads, vehicles and construction going on."
