10-4A WEEKEND SOCCER ROUNDUP: Poteet, West Mesquite teams impressive in season debuts

Published: Sunday, January 13, 2013 9:57 PM CST
First impressions do not tell the entire story, but the Poteet and West Mesquite soccer teams are hoping there is a lot of truth in what they saw in the first tournament action of the year.

All four teams won at least one game, with the Poteet girls and West Mesquite boys making the strongest runs through their respective tournaments last week.

The Pirate girls had an impressive debut, sweeping three games at the Waxahachie Highway 287 Tournament by a combined score of 13-2.

Poteet set the tone in the opener on Thursday, as Kaylah Hunter scored twice and Sheridan Barnes, Emely Belloso and Sagai Tystad added goals in a 5-0 shutout of Sunset.

The Pirates did not let down in the second game on Thursday, as Hunter again scored twice and Barnes and Jessica Dowse also found the net in a 4-1 victory against Mansfield Legacy.

Hunter saved her best performance for last, as she tallied all four goals in the team's 4-1 victory over Garland on Friday.

The Poteet boys started strong at the Frisco ISD Dr. Pink Tournament with a 5-0 blanking of Denton on Thursday before battling Frisco Wakeland to a 1-1 tie on Friday.

West Mesquite's boys team picked up where it left off last season at the Forney Tournament.

The Wranglers got tested, with three one-goal games, including two on Thursday. Javier Garcia and Isai Velasquez powered West Mesquite past Midland Lee, 2-1, and then Emmanuel Hernandez and Daniel Rodriguez provided the scoring punch in a 2-1 win against Longview Pine Tree.

The Wranglers continued their solid play with two more victories on Friday. Rodriguez and Velasquez each scored as they edged Amarillo, 2-1. West Mesquite was finally able to breathe easy at the end of a match in the finale, as Velasquez tallied a hat trick and Brandon Carillo added a score in a 4-0 shutout of College Station.

The West Mesquite girls have been trying to fight their way back to the playoffs for several years and they showed promise at the Azle Tournament, posting a 1-1-2 record.

The highlight for the Wranglers came in the tournament opener on Thursday when Alexandria Leiva had two goals and Sarrina Martinez added another in a 3-1 victory against Denison. Leiva also scored the team's only goal in a 1-1 draw against Burkburnett on Friday.

On Saturday, Taylor Walls scored her first goal of the season but it was not enough in a 2-1 loss to Argyle. West Mesquite then closed the weekend with a scoreless draw against Azle.
