Swimming: Purdue's Roth preparing for Olympic trials

Published: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 3:20 PM CDT
During her time at Creekview and Purdue University, there has been no question about Lauren Roth's ability in the pool.

The former Class 5A medalist continued to garner awards at the collegiate level and will now take aim at the pinnacle of her sport when she competes at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb. with a spot at the 2012 Olympic Games in London on the line.

Roth qualified for the trials in three events but will compete in just two: the 200- and 400-meter freestyle. She also qualified for the butterfly, but an injury to her neck during the second semester of her senior season has made swimming the event challenging.

Roth heads to the trials after setting a Purdue record in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.12), which is college's equivalent to the 400 at the Olympics, to go with a pair of program records in the 400 and 800 free relay events. She also claimed two honorable mention All American citations. Her career-best times in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 butterfly each rank in the top three in program history.

"To be honest, the injury to my neck really set me back a bit in my second semester this year," Roth said. "So it was kind of a bittersweet ending to my college career. But I'm still very excited to go the trials and give it a shot."

Roth said she has time between the events and will decide if she can compete in the 200 (Wednesday) after seeing how she fares Tuesday in the 400.

"This is the biggest meet I will have been to," she said. "I competed at the World Championship trials in Indianapolis two years ago, but this is the biggest."

While at Creekview, Roth set individual and relay records in every swimming event, claiming eight individual district championships, eight regional championships and qualifying for state in eight events, including reaching the finals on multiple occasions.

Her success hasn't been limited to the pool, however, as the senior recently earned Capital One Academic All-District honors.

A psychology major with a 3.92 GPA, Roth was among the 11 first-team selections from District Five. She will advance to the national ballot from which the Academic All-American teams are selected.

"Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the career I had and I was happy with the ways things went during my first semester," Roth said. "I'm very proud to receive the academic award, but when I look back at college I think I am most pleased with setting the program record in the 500."
