Wrestling: Dragons drop ranked Wakeland, The Colony's Green reaches medal stand
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
A busy stretch for Carroll's wrestling team got under way recently as the Dragons varsity squad went on the road Dec. 6 to face Frisco Wakeland in a dual.
The Wolverines were ranked No. 9 in Class 4A but couldn't stand up to a Carroll team that won, 49-24.
Cody Lindberg, Harry Chapman and Matt Spuria all notched victories over opponents that are state-ranked as the Dragons moved to 5-1 on the season. Carroll's junior varsity team found success against Wakeland as well with many competitors winning by pin.
The Lady Dragons also sent a representative to the tournament and Moana Olarta didn't disappoint. In the first tournament of her career, Olarta took top honors in her weight class, winning all three of her matches by fall in the first round.
Previously, Carroll kicked off its season Dec.1 at the Thanksgiving Throwdown Duals hosted by Frisco Liberty.
The Dragons went 4-1 at the event, picking up victories over Skyline (twice), Liberty and McKinney despite being short-handed and having to start five freshmen and three sophomores in the 14-man lineup. The only loss Carroll suffered was to Rockwall Heath, 42-27.
Key performers for the Dragons were Michael Basler, Brandon Magee, Dustin Flegle, Swoyer and Spuria.
The squads' next competition will be Saturday at the EMS Classic in Boswell.
Green reaches stand at Tri-State
The Colony's wrestling team also continued its slate by competing at the Tri-State Invitational hosted by Lake Highlands and one varsity wrestler found success as Jake Green placed fourth.
In the junior varsity tournament, Chris Bynum took second, Brandon Yates and Stephen Battle placed third and Alex Quin, Jon Veath, Jason Richardson, Marcus Martinez, Luke Owens, Johnathan Gomez and Ethan Lochridge finished fourth.
