Stampede: Mustangs fall to Broncos in the first round
By Gary Jacobs, special to the Courier-Gazette
McKinney Christian Academy lost in the opening round of the TAPPS III area playoffs to the No. 5 ranked Bay Area Christian Broncos.
Despite strong play by senior quarterback Dallas Brock and 121 yards rushing by running back Connor Doyle, the Mustangs were overcome by the Broncos' balanced offensive attack. Brock, normally a two-way starter, had been sidelined for over two weeks with pneumonia, and was only able to play a limited amount at quarterback. Another obstacle for the Mustangs was the loss of a two-way starter in senior lineman Zach Harrell, who broke his ankle at practice this past Monday.
Bay Area started scoring on its first possession of the game. Running back Caleb Scott finished off a 73-yard drive with a four-yard run. Connor Crow was good on the point after, making the score 7-0. The Broncos would broke it open even further in the second quarter.
Crow's point after made the score 21-0. On MCA's next possession it made a risky call on fourth-and-one from their own 33-yard line. With Brock under center, the Mustangs made a direct snap to lone back Doyle who raced through the Bronco defense and up the left sideline for a 67-yard touchdown.
Caleb Wysong's kick made it 21-7. BACS managed to score once more with only 27 seconds left in the half. Freeberg again scored, but this time on a seven-yard run. With Crow's kick the Broncos led 28-7.
In the third quarter MCA came out charging and marched down to Bay Area's seven-yard line. Big plays on the drive included a 34-yard reception by Jamie Greenwell from Reese Shaw, and pass interference against Greenwell in the end zone, which set up MCA at the eight-yard line.
An interception in the end zone two plays later by BACS defender Garrett Mercantel stopped the drive, however. The Broncos then took the ball down the field and scored on Crow's 38-yard field goal. BACS scored again on Mercantel's 10-yard reception from Freeberg. After MCA regained possession on the ensuing kickoff, quarterback Shaw's pass was tipped, intercepted, and returned 32 yards for a touchdown. Crow's point after brought the score to 45-7.
Final scoring in the game came on a fourth quarter fake field goal by the Broncos when holder Jordan Greer passed 17 yards to Mercantile. MCA managed to score once again when Dallas Brock carried it in from the nine-yard line.
McKinney Christian finished its season with a 5-6 record while Bay Area Christian advances to the regional final with a 10-1 mark.
