12-5A WEEKEND SOCCER ROUNDUP: Horn boys pick up three wins in tournament play

Published: Sunday, January 13, 2013 9:56 PM CST
The first tournaments of the 2013 soccer season took place last week and while all of the Mesquite ISD 12-5A teams had some highlights, it was the Horn boys that enjoyed the most success.

The Jaguars got off to a strong start by posting a 3-1-1 record at the Forney Tournament.

Horn closed the event on a high note with a 4-1 victory over the host team on Saturday. The Jaguars spread it around offensively, getting goals from Jose Beltran, Brandon Van Lehn, Alex Suonemin and Eliseo Casillas.

Horn had split a pair of games on Thursday. Aric Lopez, Isaiah Morales and Matt McGlaughlin took care of the scoring in a 3-1 victory over Ferris. McGlaughlin also found the back of the net against Waco University but it was not enough in a 4-1 loss.

On Friday, the Jaguars battled Pearce to a scoreless draw in their first match, and then got a pair of goals from Taylor Lewis and another from Suonemin in a 3-1 win against Lindale.

The North Mesquite boys won two of their three games at the Jesuit-Meinster Tournament.

Mario Gonzalez, Juan Mendez and Gustavo Rosas each scored goals in a 3-1 win over Sachse in the event opener on Thursday.

The Stallions were blanked by Jesuit, 1-0, on Friday, but bounced back on Saturday to notch a 3-2 victory over Belton.

The Mesquite boys emerged from three hard-fought games without a loss at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD Winter Classic.

The Skeeters opened on Thursday by blanking The Colony, 1-0, with Richard Anayegbu providing the game's lone score.

Mesquite came away with a pair of draws on Friday. Walter Cavazos had both goals in a 2-2 tie with Molina, and Anayegbu and Melvin Gutierrez-Santos found the net in a 2-2 draw against Plano West.

On the girls side, North Mesquite claimed a pair of victories at the Richland Winter Classic.

The Stallions started strong on Thursday, as Aileen Lara scored twice and Megan Potter and Alexis Santos added goals in a 4-0 shutout of Fort Worth North Side.

North Mesquite followed up with another victory on Friday, as Kory Dixon and Santos provided the scoring to help edge North Crowley, 2-1.

The Stallions and Richland finished in a scoreless tie in their first game on Saturday. In the finale, Dixon scored her second goal of the tournament, but it was not enough, as North Crowley gained some revenge with a 2-1 shootout win.

The Horn girls won their opener at the Waxahachie Highway 287 Tournament by shutting out the hosts, 1-0, on Thursday, and then closed out on Friday with a scoreless draw against Skyline.
