12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mesquite rolls over Rockwall to take over first place

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 2:27 PM CST
Mesquite made a major statement on Tuesday.

Not only did the Skeeters take down previously-undefeated and district-leading Rockwall, they did so in convincing fashion.

Mesquite domianted the final three quarters on its way to a 59-43 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Rockwall High School.

The Skeeters move to 5-1 in 12-5A and take a one-half game lead over Rockwall and Horn, who defeated Tyler Lee on Tuesday to improve to 4-1.

Despite playing on the road against a team that has one of the top traditions in the area, Mesquite was undeterred after falling behind early.

The Skeeters outscored the Yellow Jackets 18-9 in the second period to take a 29-23 lead at halftime and they were just getting started. Mesquite pushed the advantage to eight points heading to the fourth quarter and then closed the game on an 18-10 run.

Briana Caro and Brianna Williams shouldered the scoring load with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

While that contest was the marquee game of the night, Horn quietly went about its business with a 47-37 victory over Tyler Lee as it moved into a tie for second place in 12-5A.

The Jaguars led 17-11 after one quarter and then turned up the defensive intensity, allowing only 24 points during the final three periods.

Jada Underwood continued her strong freshman campaign with a team-high 16 points, while Lauren Bradshaw was also in double figures with 13.

North Mesquite had a chance to improve its standing in the playoff race but after a good start, was unable to keep up in a 66-38 loss to Longview on Tuesday.

The Stallions took an early 16-13 lead and even after the Lobos made a run, they were still within 29-25 at halftime.

However, Longview took control in the third quarter, breaking the game open with a 22-4 run and it never looked back.

Taylor Carraway had 10 points to pace North Mesquite, while Kara Hitt added nine.

The first half of the 12-5A season will conclude on Friday when the Stallions traveling across town to take on Horn.

Mesquite will enjoy its district bye while Rockwall faces off with Longview, who currently sits in fourth place with a 3-2 record.

The second half of the season will get started with a couple of big games on Tuesday when the Skeeters go on the road to play at the Lobos while the Jaguars host the Yellow Jackets.

SATURDAY

Mesquite and Horn had each picked up big victories on Saturday.

The Skeeters steamrolled over crosstown rival North Mesquite in a 76-24 blowout win.

Mesquite wasted little time, grabbing a double-digit lead early and then emarking on a 22-2 run to take a commanding 40-9 lead into halftime.

The Skeeters put it away in the third, going on a 26-4 spurt to push the advantage to 41 at the end of three quarters.

Mesquite got plenty of scoring from up and down the roster. Viershanie Latham led the way with 16 points while Williams had 13 points and Ajsia Smith added 10.

Racheal Malone was one of the bright spots for the Stallions as she had a team-high 11 points.

Horn had a similarly easy time on Saturday in its 62-17 rout of Rockwall-Heath.

The Jaguars took an early 10-point lead and then outscored the Hawks 38-4 during the second and third periods.

Chelsea Lamb had 13 points and Underwood added 10 to pace the Horn offense.

WEDNESDAY

Mesquite grabbed a double-digit lead after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 42-24 by halftime. Caro scored 22 points to lead the Skeeters, while Chamberlain Robinson and Williams each added 13.

North Mesquite's bid to knock off undefeated Rockwall came up just short in a 60-53 loss.

North Mesquite overcame an early deficit to grab a three-point lead at halftime and still led 45-42 through three quarters. But the Yellow Jackets showed why they are atop the 12-5A standings, as they went on an 18-8 spurt to close the game and pull out the win.
