Top McKinney Sports Stories 2012 - (No. 8) Stately Accomplishments: McKinney, North track athletes medal

Published: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 2:39 PM CST
(Editor's Note: McKinney and McKinney North had several athletes medal in this year's state meet. Among them was McKinney runner Meghan Shea, who made her fourth consecutive state appearance. The original article appeared in May.)

Track athletes from McKinney and McKinney North took to the blocks Friday for the first day of competition at the state track and field meet in Austin and, led by distance runner Meghan Shea, came away with their share of hardware.

Shea represented McKinney in her fourth and final appearance at the state track meet by medaling twice with a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run and a third-place finish in the 800 run. It was the most successful state appearance of her high school career.

Shea totaled 14 points between the two events.

In the 1,600, Shea beat third-place finisher Devin Clark of Spring Branch Smithson Valley by a fraction of a second. Shea finished with a time of 4:57.631 seconds compared to Clark's final of 4:57.637 -- making for a true photo finish.

Arin Rice of Canyon won the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.75.

Rice and Shea placed side-by-side in the 800 as well. Shea placed third with a final of 2:12.61, while Rice finished second with a time of 2:09.90. Both were outpaced by Meschelle Gills of Manvel, who won the event by turning in a time of 2:09.82.

McKinney North got in on the medal hunt with a third-place finish from its 4x400 relay team made up of Daniel DiJoseph, Austin Parsonage, Maliek Golden and Mark Bresnahan. The Bulldogs turned in a time of 3:15.17 to earn the bronze and pick up 12 points for their team.

The relay team from El Paso Burges won the event with a time of 3:14.59.

The Bulldogs relay team qualified for the state meet by placing first at regionals with a time of 3:18.12 -- edging Lancaster, which finished second to also qualify for state, by a fraction of a second. Lancaster finished with a time of 3:18.16.

In the process, the relay team became the first in North history to qualify for state and helped power a second-place overall finish for their team at regionals. That placement ranked as the highest in school history and represented a significant jump from their 29th-place finish they turned in last year. North also won this year's District 10-4A Meet.

In field events, Adam Grant represented McKinney with a third-place finish in the long jump, where he secured six points with a best jump of 6.80 meters. Brandon Moss of El Paso Chapin won the event with a jump of 6.94 meters, while Corey Coleman of Richardson Pearce placed second with a jump of 6.83 meters.

Grant, the only McKinney ISD competitor other than Shea to compete in two events, also placed eighth in the triple jump with a best jump of 13.41 meters. John Warren of Killeen won the event with a jump of 14.90 meters.

McKinney discus thrower Andresha Jackson finished eighth with a top throw of 38.15 meters. Chamaya Turner of New Braunfels Canyon dominated the event with a throw of 48.81 meters to take the gold medal.
