Plano man receives 48-year sentence for assaulting police officer with a knife
Staff report
A Plano resident has been convicted assaulting a Plano police officer with a knife in 2011.
Michael Ory, 38, was sentenced to 48 years in prison for the Aug. 15 attack, in which he was shot one time after rushing officers with the weapon. Another officer discharged his Taser, striking Ory in the leg.
Ory and his girlfriend's 18-year-old son were arguing and fighting, testimony revealed. When Ory's girlfriend attempted to pacify him, he began choking her. He also choked the son, causing Ory's girlfriend to believe that her son was going to die. She was able to lock herself in an interior room and called 911 for help while her son was able to free himself and run out the door.
"The officer, for his own personal safety, had no choice but to shoot him," David Tilley, Plano PD spokesman, said at the time of the incident. "This all happened within a matter of seconds."
Tilley said the incident escalated quickly, adding that disturbance calls are among the most dangerous calls because officers can never be sure what exactly is taking place.
"Our dispatchers did a good job obtaining as much information as possible," he said. "These officers made every effort to try and resolve this smoothly."
Ory was convicted of aggravated assault of a public servant, deadly conduct, and two charges of assault by strangulation causing bodily injury.
