12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Horn routs Longview to maintain hold on first place

Published: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 1:37 PM CST
After back-to-back victories over Rockwall and Mesquite that allowed them to take over sole possession of first place in 12-5A, Horn knew it could not look past a dangerous Longview team that is in a fight for a playoff berth of its own.

The Jaguars had no such problem, taking control from the start and cruising to a 56-29 victory over the Lobos on Tuesday.

Horn improves to 8-1 in district play and holds on to its one-game lead over both Mesquite, which defeated Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday, and Rockwall, a winner over Tyler Lee.

The Jaguars did all their heavy lifting in the first half, starting the game on a 17-5 run and stretching the advantage to 34-14 by halftime.

Jada Underwood had 14 points, Chelsea Lamb scored 12 and Dawn Nwoko chipped in with 11 for Horn., who wrapped up a playoff berth with the victory.

Mesquite bounced back from a tough, two-point loss to the Jaguars with a 51-33 victory over Rockwall-Heath.

The Skeeters followed a similar script as Horn, opening the game with a 16-5 spurt and extending to a comfortable 33-16 lead by halftime.

Viershanie Latham and Brianna Williams each scored 16 points for Mesquite, while Jordan Mitchell had a game-high 18 points for the Hawks.

The Skeeters and Yellow Jackets can each clinch playoff spots with victories on Friday. Mesquite will host Tyler Lee, while Rockwall will play at home against North Mesquite.

The Stallions, who had a bye on Tuesday, need to start stringing together victories quickly if they hope to make the playoffs, but that will be no easy task. In addition to playing the Yellow Jackets on Friday, they will also face Mesquite on Tuesday.

Horn has a bye on Friday but will look to maintain its district lead on Tuesday against last-place Rockwall-Heath.

Unless North Mesquite can make a charge, the fourth playoff berth looks to be up for grabs between Longview and Tyler Lee, who are both 3-5 in 12-5A with a head-to-head match-up looming on Tuesday.

FRIDAY

For the second consecutive game, Horn rose to the occasion in a battle for first place as it held on for a 46-44 victory over crosstown rival Mesquite on Friday.

That win, coupled with the Jaguars' victory over Rockwall last Tuesday, propelled them into sole possession of first place in 12-5A.

Horn dominated for much of the contest, especially in the opening quarter when it grabbed a 15-1 lead.

The Jaguars still led 38-22 going to the fourth quarter before the Skeeters reeled off a furious run to tie the game late, but Horn was able to regain control in the final minutes to eke out the two-point win.

Kristina Smith had 15 points and Lauren Bradshaw scored 10 to lead the Jaguars, while Williams tallied 18 points and Latham added 10 for the Skeeters.

North Mesquite had its playoff hopes take another hit with a 64-24 loss to Tyler Lee on Friday.

The Stallions were overwhelmed from the start, as the Red Raiders opened the game with a 24-2 run and extended the advantage to 44-8 by halftime.

Makquisha Carruth had 10 points and Kara Hitt added seven for North Mesquite.
