12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Skeeters cruise past Stallions, Jaguars maintain hold on first
Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 1:55 AM CST
There was very little drama involving the top of the district on Tuesday, as Horn and Mesquite each won comfortably.
The Jaguars improved to 9-1 with a 48-35 victory over Rockwall-Heath. The Hawks gave Horn a tougher tussle than some might have thought based on the records, but the game was rarely in doubt.
The Jaguars relied on their defense early on to take a 25-14 lead into halftime and a 10-2 run to start the second half put them in complete control. Rockwall-Heath shaved some points off the deficit with the reserves in late, but it made no difference.
Jada Underwood led all scorers with 19 points, with Tyler Hamilton also in double figures with 12.
Katie Webster scored 11 points and Jordan Mitchell added 10 for the Hawks.
Rivarly games can sometimes be tricky, but that was not the case for Mesquite as it had no problems in a 65-22 victory over North Mesquite on Tuesday.
The Skeeters led 16-7 after one quarter but they were just getting started. They added runs of 18-4 and 23-2 as the advantage ballooned to 57-13 through three quarters.
Brianna Williams had 18 points to lead a balanced scoring effort for Mesquite. Briana Caro scored 14 points and Brittany Pearson chipped in with 10.
Tralesha Williams paced the Stallions with seven points.
Mesquite has one big game left on the regular season menu when it travels to face Rockwall on Friday. The Skeeters have a half-game lead on the Yellow Jackets for second place and they will wrap up the second seed with a win.
Mesquite, which has a bye on the final day of the regular season, would also put itself in position to tie for the district title should Horn slip up against Tyler Lee on Friday or North Mesquite on Tuesday.
In East Texas, Longview wrapped up the final playoff berth by holding on against Tyler Lee for a 49-48 win. The two teams could still finish tied in the standings, but the Lobos own the head-to-head tiebreaker with their season sweep.
FRIDAY
Mesquite used a fast start and a big game from Williams to hold off Tyler Lee on Friday in a 54-49 victory.
Mesquite set the tone at the beginning of the game with a 14-5 run to take the lead. Tyler Lee hung around, pulling to within five at halftime and then staying within striking distance in the second half, but could never quite get all the way back, with Williams' 25 points being a big reason.
North Mesquite's playoff chances officially came to an end on Friday with a 76-20 loss to Rockwall.
The Stallions scored only two points in the opening quarter and the Yellow Jackets then bombarded them with a 32-5 run in the second.
North Mesquite, which was unable to break double digits in any quarter, got 15 points from Makqhuisha Carruth, but the rest of the team combined to score only five more.
