WEB EXCLUSIVE: Flying higher: Lobos run past Eagles

Published: Thursday, January 31, 2013 4:43 PM CST
LITTLE ELM – The Little Elm boys basketball team defeated Prosper, 76-44, Tuesday behind a 24-point game from Devante’ Pullum.

The opening tip-off between the Lobos and Eagles was the start of a fast-paced game where each team pushed the ball up the court in a physical contest.

While it was close for the better part of the opening frame, that tone would change once the teams got into the second quarter. Little Elm took advantage of mistakes and used turnovers to create easy transition points.

Just when it started to look as if Prosper would regain momentum, the Eagles bench was whistled for a technical foul. The Lobos capitalized at the charity stripe and never looked back from there.

Little Elm took a 34-19 lead into the locker room, but Prosper came out with a sense of urgency to start the second half. However, a quick exchange without points for both teams quickly led to a Little Elm run that gave the Lobos a 40-23 advantage midway through the third quarter.

A second technical foul in the third frame only helped the Lobos extend their lead and finish the third with a 54-35 lead.

“Any time you can get points, it will gain momentum,” said Rusty Segler, Little Elm head coach. “

The fourth quarter started with more of the same, as the Lobos were able to limit the Eagles offense.

“I am very proud with how we played defensively,” Segler said.

The remainder of the fourth went on just as the rest of the game had, with Little Elm controlling the final minutes and never letting its foot off the gas. The Lobos finished the night with a 76-44 victory to set up a possible showdown with The Colony in two weeks.

“This team truly doesn’t look ahead, and we take it one game at a time,” Segler said.

Little Elm will be back in action against Wakeland Friday before the rematch with The Colony next Tuesday in Little Elm.
