LEWISVILLE -- When the final seconds ticked off the clock Friday, Lewisville's boys basketball team mobbed midcourt in celebration of its 46-37 victory over rival Marcus.

And with good reason. The win snapped a seven-game losing skid for the Farmers against the Marauders that dated back to Feb. 3 of 2009 and propelled Lewisville (3-2) into sole possession of third in District 5-5A ahead of the Marcus (2-3).

"I could tell by the reaction that this meant a lot," said Gary Collier, Lewisville head coach. "A lot of the guys have been here for four years and haven't really come close to beating Marcus. Football guys and basketball guys. It was very good to experience this victory and was big in the overall scheme of things and in terms of playoff positioning."

Trailing for much of the fourth quarter, Lewisville pulled ahead by one at 34-33 with less than 3 minutes remaining on a 3-pointer from Myles Ward -- a shot that caromed of the rim and floated high in the air before dropping through.

"I thought both teams played hard and did some really good things," said Clay Cody, Marcus head coach. "[Ward] hit a really big shot and we came down and got some good looks throughout, we just couldn't make enough. The game was a little closer than the final score when we had to start fouling but you have to give Lewisville credit."

The Farmers finished off Marcus with a stretch of 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes.

"The kids did a great job of playing until the end," Collier said. "If we can just keep games close, we normally win those. If you look at our wins and losses, we win the close ones and the ones we lose are by 15 or 20. That's how it is a lot with a young team."

Marquis Williams was 5-of-6 from the line in the closing minutes, while Anthony Davis converted three en route to a team-high 14 points. Davis also knocked down a 3-pointer in the fourth to put the Farmers in front, 33-31.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Jack Holden -- who posted a game-high 15 points for the Marauders -- scored on a lob from Michael Mayhew to even the contest and put Marcus back in front on a pair of free throws after drawing the fourth foul on Davis with four minutes left.

But despite Davis being relegated to the bench momentarily, the Farmers responded to take the lead and pull away.

"Anthony is one our better players and got in foul trouble but we went to Caleb Loggins and he did a very good job," Collier said. "That's the benefit of having a deep team."

Jaden Wright chipped in 10 points for the Farmers, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter as Lewisville outscored Marcus, 8-3.

Lewisville used the press to harass Marcus throughout, forcing 15 turnovers while committing just nine of their own.

"Defensively we wanted to pick them up full-court and use our depth," Collier said. "We wanted to force the tempo and try to get guys tired. It wasn't so much the turnovers we forced at the end as much as it was trying to wear them out."

"They did a good job with their pressure," Cody added. "Our young guards had a little trouble with that. But I was proud of my kids and they did everything we asked them to do. It just comes down them making some big shots and their free throws."

Lewisville looks to improve to 4-2 at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Denton Ryan.

"Our guys are learning how to win games and how to finish games down the stretch," Collier said. "They're just young and I can't wait until they get a more and more experience."

Marcus tries to bounce back at the same time Tuesday when it hosts Coppell.

"These kids are pretty resilient," Cody said. "We have another big one on Tuesday and if we win that, we're looking better for the playoffs.

"We're some much better than we were at the beginning of the year and are getting better each day. You can't measure it and we have a chance to do something a lot of people didn't think we could do."
