Golf: Out the shoot: Marcus opens season with record-setting day

Published: Saturday, October 20, 2012 1:22 AM CDT
Records were shattered on both the boys and girls sides last weekend for Marcus' golf teams as the Marauders and Lady Marauders won their respective tournaments at the Cleburne Fall Classic.

Both squads took to Cleburne Golf Links with the Lady Marauders claiming first on the strength of a program-record two-day total of 627. The Lady Marauders posted a score of 308 during the first round, which sets the record for lowest one-day score.

Hayley Dambold fired consecutive rounds of 74 and 72 on her way to claiming a gold medal, while Ali Kinder posted rounds of 76 and 83 to take third. Also competing for Marcus were Rachel Riggle (82-85), Delaney Mills (76-80) and Megan Vandenburg (84-84).

"Our girls went out there with high expectations and did a great job," said Kerry Gabel, Marcus head coach. "I think obviously to set a school record shows they did a good job. We need to keep proceeding and stay focused and then hopefully we can start to think about making a run for a state title in the spring."

The Lady Marauders weren't the only ones etching their names in the Marcus record books, however.

Marcus sent two boys teams to Cleburne and the Red and Silver teams finished first and second, respectively. Additionally the Red team's two-day score of 586 and Round 1 score of 284 set program records. The Silver team was in third after one round before rallying for second on Day 2.

Individually, Dustin Lewis matched the best round a Marauder has ever shot when he followed up his first-round 74 by carding a 67. Carter Koen earned a bronze for the Marauders (75-71).

The rest of the Red team included Cody Case (77-73), Andrew Spear (78-73) and Grant Andries (76-78).

The Silver team featured Bryce Osborn (80-73), Duncan Sutherland (80-75), Matt Schier (79-77), Max Schwolert (79-79) and Taylor Vickers (75-85).

"The kids have been working very hard and have really been pushing themselves," Gabel said. "Dustin had been solid, but that was his best round. And I was pleased with Carter because he has been right on that edge of shooting par. That's been his goal and now he just needs to be consistent with those numbers. Hopefully their showings will help put the pressure on the others to keep working, too."

Gabel was also impressed with the ability of the freshman Osborn to bounce back from a poor first day.

"He kind of struggled to shoot 80 on the first round, but he was much more at ease in his second round," he said.

Marcus' boys continue Oct. 29 at the McKinney Boyd Classic at Stonebriar Country Club. Next up for the Lady Marauders is the Texas Two-Step Nov. 9-10 from Mansfield National.

Lewisville was also in action, opening its season Sept. 24 at the Denton Guyer Invitational from Oakmont Country Club.

The varsity boys team placed third of 19 teams with a score of 316.

The Farmers were paced by Trevor Proctor, who tied for first after carding an even-par round of 72. Captain Cameron Mixson followed in third after shooting 74. Trevor Cash, John Shofner and Landon Moore fired rounds of 84, 86 and 90, respectively.

Lewisville's girls team had a strong showing as well, finishing sixth as a unit.

Lady Farmer competitors included Grace Kottas (92), Samantha McNabb (100), Lisa Ridinger (108) and Alyssa Ramirez (113).

Flower Mound, meanwhile, opened its season late in September and tied for 23rd at the Bart Granger from Pecan Valley Golf Course in Fort Worth.

Flower Mound coach Brad Self said both the Jaguars and Lady Jaguars have been performing well thus far and were paced by a solid three-day performance on the boys side from Nathan Gray (78-76-71), while Callie Morris paced the Lady Jaguars in fourth at the Harbor Lakes (76) in their first tournament.
