Sunnyvale boys pick up key victory; girls fall victim to upset

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 9:57 PM CST
The Sunnyvale boys basketball team lost two games during the first half of the 12-2A season.

The Raiders avenged the first of those setbacks last week by taking down state-ranked Farmersville and they made it 2-for-2 on Tuesday with a 50-47 victory over Leonard.

Sunnyvale improves to 7-2 in 12-2A play, which keeps them one game behind district-leading Farmersville (8-1) and it allows them to move past Leonard (6-3) and into sole possession of second place.

The Raiders lost the first meeting by a single point and for three quarters, they looked as if they would avoid any late-game drama.

Sunnyvale took a modest 25-18 lead into halftime, but by the end of the third quarter, the advantage had swelled to 39-26.

The Tigers refused to go away, though, erupting for 21 points in the final frame, but the Raiders had enough to hold on down the stretch and take another big step toward the playoffs.

Thomas Wendt had 18 points and eight rebounds, Stephen Kirven had four 3-pointers and Josh Quinn had a huge all-around game with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four blocks and three steals.

The Sunnyvale girls were not as fortunate, as they were tripped up by Leonard in a 50-45 loss on Tuesday.

The Raiders were hoping to set up a season-ending showdown with Gunter for the district championship. Instead, by falling to 9-2, they watched as Gunter wrapped up the 12-2A title by improving to 11-0 with a win against Caddo Mills.

Leonard entered the contest clinging to a one-game lead for the fourth and final playoff spot and it played like a desperate team. But with their upset victory, combined with Farmersville's surprising loss to Van Alstyne, it is the Tigers who are now just one win away from a postseason berth.

Both Sunnyvale teams will have a bye on Friday. The Raider girls will conclude the regular season with a road game at Gunter on Tuesday, while the boys will continue their 12-2A stretch run against Gunter later that night.
