10-4A GIRLS TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: West Mesquite wins consolation title at DISD Tournament

Published: Sunday, December 30, 2012 7:13 PM CST
West Mesquite and Skyline entered this week's Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament as two of the favorites.

As luck would have it, though, they were matched up against one another in the opening round.

The Wranglers lost that battle in a 56-45 setback and they spent the rest of the tournament taking it out on other teams.

West Mesquite (17-6) bounced back from that early loss to win four consecutive games, capping the run with a 55-52 victory over Wilmer-Hutchins to claim the tournament consolation championship on Saturday.

The difference in the game came in the first quarter when the Wranglers opened with a 20-3 run.

Wilmer-Hutchins spent the rest of the game chipping away, and while they got close, the early deficit was too large to overcome.

Alexus Bertrand helped prevent the comeback with a game-high 30 points, while Claudia Price added 15.

The consolation crown helped West Mesquite forget about being knocked out of the winner's bracket with the loss to Skyline. Price scored 23 points and the game was tied at 27-27 at halftime but the Raiders were able to take command in the second half.

The Wranglers took out the frustrations later on Thursday by thrashing Molina by an eye-popping final of 121-16.

West Mesquite, which had six players in double figures, led 68-12 at halftime and it only got worse from there.

Jazmyne Walker had 25 points and Regina Garrett added 20 but they had plenty of company. Tamia Culligan scored 19 points, Price had 14 and Teiatress Johnson and Alexis Jordan each added 11.

The Wranglers continued to dominate on Friday. They opened the game against South Garland with a 25-4 run and never looked back in a 79-26 win. They once again had six players in double figures, led by Bertrand with 15 points, Price with 13 and Jordan with 11.

West Mesquite then clinched its spot in the consolation final with a 70-45 rout of former district rival Lancaster.

The Wranglers will look to extend their winning streak as they resume their pursuit of an eighth straight district title when they play at Highland Park on Thursday, at home against Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday and then on the road at Forney on Tuesday.

POTEET

After two promising wins, Poteet ran into a Skyline machine in the quarterfinals of the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament on Friday.

The Pirates were held to four points or less in every quarter by a dominant Raider defense as they moved on with a 64-12 victory.

Shyari Cheathem had five points for Poteet, which trailed 32-4 at halftime.

Things went much more smoothly in the first two rounds of the tournament.

The Pirates (7-14) used some smothering defense of their own in an opening 58-22 victory over South Garland on Thursday.

Poteet led 40-4 and then coasted in the second half. Cheathem led the way with 17 points, while Raeghan Shaw was also in double figures with 13.

The Pirates had advanced in the winner's bracket later on Thursday with a 51-48 win over Bryan Adams. The Pirates were sluggish through three quarters, trailing 36-22, but exploded down the stretch with a 29-12 run to pull out the win.

Cheathem once again paced the offense with 22 points.

Poteet will pick up its 10-4A schedule with three games in six days, hosting Carrollton Creekview on Thursday, playing at Terrell on Saturday and then playing at home against North Forney on Tuesday.
