Girls basketball: Not so fast: Lewisville stuns Coppell with comeback to snag final playoff spot, Cowboys top Farmers

Published: Tuesday, February 5, 2013 11:04 PM CST
LEWISVILLE — Playoff hopes were on life support after two quarters Tuesday for Lewisville’s girls basketball team.

Trailing by 18 points and needing a win over Coppell, the Lady Farmers provided a stirring comeback, rallying to force overtime before they punched their ticket to playoffs with a 60-53 victory.

The teams entered the game in a three-way tie for fourth with Hebron, which came up short against Marcus giving the Lady Farmers a playoff spot.

Jada Butts and Monisha Neal scored 16 points apiece to lead the Lady Farmers, including 14 for each in the second half and overtime.

Lewisville also received a big boost from Precious Agu, who scored all 10 of her points after halftime in addition to contributing nine rebounds, four of which led to second-chance points.

Caitie Galvan posted 11 of her team-high 13 points in the first half — including all three of her 3-point attempts — for Coppell as the Cowgirls cruised to the break with a 33-15 lead capped by a 3-pointer in the closing seconds Rachel Mulumba.

But Lewisville scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to get back in the game. The Cowgirls didn’t get on the board until 2:48 remained in the frame.

Kalah Jiggets gave Coppell a little breathing room late in the third when she crossed over a Lewisville defender and got to the basket for a layup to push the margin back to seven at 38-31 entering the fourth.

Late in the fourth, Neal traded baskets with Coppell to draw the Lady Farmers even on a pair of occasions, before a 3-pointer from Butts gave Lewisville its first lead with 1:05 left at 48-45.

Coppell received a bucket from Galvan and a free throw from Jaidyn Phillips to knot the score, 48-48, and a last-second shot from Neal off an offensive rebound rimmed out forcing the extra frame.

In overtime, Neal knocked down seven free throws and Lewisville outscored Coppell, 12-5. The Lady Farmers held the advantage in the third quarter, 13-5, and in the fourth quarter, 17-10.

Lewisville will open the playoffs Monday or Tuesday in the bi-district round against an opponent to be determined.

Boys basketball: Coppell draws even with Lewisville

Lewisville’s boys basketball (4-4) team had a chance to distance itself in the District 5-5A race Tuesday but instead saw the Coppell (4-4) draw even with a 43-37 victory.

Each team has two games remaining in district and lead Marcus (2-6) by two for the final playoff spot.

Josh Feitl paced the Cowboys with 14 points, including 3-of-4 from long range, while Simi Socks posted seven of his 11 points in the second half. Socks chipped in seven rebounds and was one of four Coppell players with at least five boards.

Caleb Loggins recorded 12 points, while Anthony Davis followed with eight but dealt with foul trouble a majority of the second half.

The Cowboys led by as many as 11 points and carried a 32-23 lead into the fourth quarter before the Farmers pulled to within four multiple times but never got closer.

Lewisville’s Myles Ward connected on a pair of corner 3-pointers to lead the comeback attempt.

Both squads have challenges ahead Friday with Lewisville hosting second-place Flower Mound, while Coppell goes on the road at the same time to face unbeaten-in-district Hebron.
