Familiar faces: Wakeland, Frisco take top honors at district swim meet

Published: Thursday, January 31, 2013 4:50 PM CST
The Wakeland boys swimming team had won three consecutive district titles until last season’s victory by Frisco.

The Wolverines didn’t take long to recapture top honors, earning 178 points for first place in Saturday’s District 11-4A swim meet at Frisco ISD Natatorium.

“I told them before the meet ‘they took it from us last year, lets go get it back,’” said Melissa Rose, Wakeland coach.

Wakeland edged out Frisco (119), McKinney North (52), Liberty (50), Heritage and Lovejoy (49) on the boys side, nabbing Rose a Coach of the Year honor for boys swimming.

“That’s a pretty big honor,” Rose said. “It means a lot to me that the people I coach with have that kind of respect for me.”

Leading Wakeland’s charge was sophomore Chase Garrott, who finished as the meet’s Outstanding Athlete for boys swimmers. Garrott was part of Wakeland’s 200-yard medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:39.28. Garrott was joined by teammates Samuel Kline, Brayden Seal and Liam Garrott in the event.

The sophomore also shined in the 100 butterfly, beating out Lovejoy’s Drew Carson for top honors after coming in at 52.81 seconds. Garrott also took top honors in the 200 individual medley and the 200 freestyle relay.

The girls side saw a dominant effort from the Lady Raccoons, who took first place with 216 points to beat out Centennial (56), Lovejoy (54), Wakeland (53) and Liberty (49).

“We knew going in that we’d be heavy favorites,” said Bruce Eubanks, Frisco coach. “Fortunately, there were no surprises.”

The Lady Raccoons began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay with the team of Mallori Allen, Rylee Lin, Hailey Jenkins and Allie Walsh finishing in 1:52.65. Centennial’s team of Kelsey Hunt, Esther Burnett, Amber Thompson and Veronica Storaci finished just behind Frisco with a time of 1:55.67.

It was then Frisco’s Lauren Jones and Ashleigh Dehls that carried the Lady Raccoons to a first-place finish. Dehls took the top spot in the one-meter diving with a score of 362.25 and was named the meet’s Oustanding Athlete in girls diving.

Jones was tabbed the Oustanding Athlete in girls swimming after a first-place time of 1:54.91 in the 200 freestyle and joining teammates Jenkins, April McDonough and Walsh for first place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.34.

“Between those two events, that enabled [Jones] to win the outstanding swimmer,” Eubanks said.

Jones and Dehls also contributed to Eubanks earning another Coach of the Year honor in girls swimming.

“I really owe it to the kids,” Eubanks said. “They’re the ones who get on the block and get the job done.”

Rounding out the team finishes on the girls side was McKinney North (45) in sixth, Lone Star (43) in seventh and Heritage in eighth (22).

On the boys side, Centennial (30) came in seventh while Lone Star (24) rounded out the top eight.

Wakeland and Frisco will now lead the way into next week’s regional swim meet. The diving portion, that will feature Liberty’s Matthew Phillip, will begin at 5 p.m. on Feb. 7 while the swimming event begins the following day at noon with the finals set to conclude Feb. 9 at 11 a.m.

“We’re really going to have to compete well at regionals,” Eubanks said. “The big thing is trying to get to the state meet.”
