CISD campus teachers of year recognized at board meeting

Fourteen teachers in the Coppell Independent School District have been chosen as campus teachers of the year.


They were recognized and presented certificates at a Jan. 14 regular meeting of the Coppell School board and will be recognized again at the district’s CISD Day at the Ballpark in Arlington on May 29.

These teachers will be eligible to possibly be named either CISD secondary teacher of the year or CISD elementary teacher of the year later this year. The recipients of those honors will then be candidates for regional and even possibly state and national honors.

The educators were selected by their peers for qualities including the implementation of innovative teaching practices in their classroom, a strong dedication to their craft, and a keen, child-centered focus.

The 2013 CISD campus teachers of the year are:

Leah Schafer, Austin Elementary, Special Education K-5; Brian Choate, Cottonwood Creek Elementary, fifth grade; Kelsey Donahue, Denton Creek Elementary, fifth grade English/Language Arts-Reading; Cacey Nanez, Lakeside Elementary, Art K-5th grade; Dianne Johnston, Mockingbird Elementary, special education resources grades 3-5; Colleen Michaels, Pinkerton Elementary, physical education; Kelly Jackson, Town Center Elementary, first grade language arts and science.

Tracy Gibson, Valley Ranch Elementary, kindergarten; Kristy Cash, Wilson Elementary, first grade; Amanda Cooper, CMS East, seventh grade math; Kimberly Pope, CMS North, seventh and eighth grade history and humanities; Shari Zoda, CMS West, sixth grade language and literacy and seventh grade Texas history; Kelly Young, Coppell High School, ninth grade blended learning and AP human geography; and Wes Vanicek, New Tech High @ Coppell, ninth grade biotech ethics and tenth and eleventh grade leadership.

Also at the Jan. 14 school board meeting, Emily Sangerhausen was presented a Certificate of Commendation after having been named the winner of the holiday greeting contest.

January is School Board Appreciation Month and several posters made by students and others thanking school board members for their service were on the walls of the meeting room.

The Coppell City Council proclaimed January as School Board Appreciation Month at is regular meeting Tuesday night.
