TUESDAY SOCCER ROUNDUP: Horn, North Mesquite, Rowlett girls pick up wins going into district play

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 10:00 PM CST
Friday is the start of the real season for many of the area soccer teams as district play kicks off.

That meant that early this week was one final chance for teams to finetune their games before the race for the playoffs begins.

Among the teams that picked up some momentum this week were the Horn, North Mesquite and Rowlett girls.

The Jaguars have been impressive since day one and they improved to 9-1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Garland on Tuesday.

Horn struck first in the 16th minute when Courtney King scored off an assist from Haley Hicks. The Jaguars went back to work early in the second half when Hicks had an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.

That would be plenty for the Horn defense and goalkeeper Bayleah Hill, who only had to make one big save in the shutout effort.

The Jaguars will enjoy a bye on Friday before starting 12-5A play on Tuesday at Rockwall-Heath.

One of Horn's district rivals, North Mesquite, is also off to a strong start and it ran its record to 7-1-3 on Monday with a 2-0 blanking of Lakeview. Freshman Kory Dixon continued her torrid start with two more goals to pace the offense and the defense did the rest.

North Mesquite will play Rockwall in the district opener on Friday at Memorial Stadium and then take on Mesquite at E.H. Hanby Stadium on Tuesday with an early start time of 5:30 p.m.

With the new realignment, either Horn or North Mesquite could be a first-round playoff opponent for Rowlett, which evened its non-district slate at 5-5-0 with a 1-0 victory over Euless Trinity on Tuesday. Grayson Byrd provided the game's lone score.

The Eagles have a bye on the first day of 11-5A play and will start district on Tuesday against Garland at 4 p.m. at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Among the other teams opening district play on Friday, Mesquite will host Longview at E.H. Hanby Stadium, while Sachse will take on North Garland at 6 p.m. at Williams Stadium.

Poteet has a non-district contest at powerhouse McKinney Boyd on Friday before starting 23-4A play on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium against Terrell.

West Mesquite has two more non-district matches, playing Woodrow Wilson on Friday and Molina on Tuesday.

BOYS

The North Mesquite and Horn boys teams were not as fortunate on the last day of non-district play.

The Stallions fell to 5-5-0 on the year as Irving Nimitz used a goal from Alan Pina in a 1-0 win on Tuesday.

McKinney Boyd got scores from Evan Trayner and Juan Moran to hand Horn (4-3-3) a 2-0 setback.

Both teams are set to start 12-5A action this week.

North Mesquite will play at Rockwall on Friday and then take on Mesquite on Tuesday at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

Horn has a bye on Friday and will play Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday at Berry Middle School.

In addition to the clash with the Stallions on Tuesday, Mesquite will open district play on Friday at Longview.

In 11-5A, Sachse will play North Garland on Friday at 8 p.m. at Williams Stadium and Lakeview on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Williams.

Rowlett has a bye on Friday and will play Garland on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.

Poteet has a bye on Friday before opening 23-4A play on Tuesday at Terrell. West Mesquite plays at McKinney Boyd on Friday and then has a bye on Tuesday.
