Swimming: Lapping the competition: Flower Mound sweeps district titles

Published: Friday, February 1, 2013 5:04 PM CST
The District 6-5A Swimming and Diving Championships were dominated by Flower Mound Friday.

The Jaguars (189) doubled up their closest competition with Hebron (93) in second and Coppell (77) in third. The Lady Jaguars (201.50), meanwhile, finished in front of Marcus (106) and Coppell (100).

“I’m really proud of our kids,” said David Snow, Flower Mound head coach. “For not being at their peak performance and being pretty worn out entering the meet, they did extremely well. It was the best all-around meet we’ve had in school history.”

Snow said entering the meet, Flower Mound hoped to qualify 25 swimmers and three divers to the UIL Class 5A Region II Championships slated for Feb. 8-9 at the Keller Natatorium. The squad did that and then some, advancing 29 in the pool and three off the board. The top six finishers in each event advance to regionals.

“We exceeded our expectations,” Snow added. “I’m thankful for our principal (Sonya Lail) and the administration for giving us the tools to be successful. We also get great support from our parents and our assistant coach (Matt Murdock) does a great job.”

Flower Mound racked up gold medals in 12 different events, including a trio of relays.

Relay teams atop the podium included the girls 200-yard freestyle relay (Kristen Whitaker, Katherine Voss, Madison Rice and Alecia McGillivray; 1:42.38), girls 400 free (McGillivray, Nicole Kimmey, Riley Archer and McKenzie Murphy; 3:44.54) and boys 400 free (Michael Regan, David Arredondo, Conor Young and Chase Sellers; 3:19.02).

“We had six relays that performed well,” Snow said. “At regionals, we’re hoping to have four teams make it out to state.”

Lady Jaguars claiming individual gold were McGillivray in the 200 free (1:55.15) and 500 free (5:06.38), Whitaker in the 50 free (24.54) and Jenna Beaury in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.76).

Boys were Andrew Shurtleff in 1-meter diving (394.35), Regan in the 200 free (1:45.40), Arredondo in the 100 butterfly (53.39), Sellers the 500 free (4:42.11) and Aidan Glynn in the 100 backstroke (54.17).

McGillivray was named the girls Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. The honor on the boys side went to Hebron’s Joshua Clothier.

Sellers, meanwhile, broke his own program record with his time in the 500 free.

“He was only the school record but get ready for this weekend,” Snow said. “A lot of swimmers taper so they are at their strongest for the meet. We had about two-thirds of our kids who were working very hard up until the day before the meet and they weren’t fully rested. We’re ready for faster swims to come next week when they aren’t as worn down.”

Marcus procured a pair of first-place finishers as well with Mackenzie Wilson taking top honors in girls diving (464.05), while Sarah Stone touched first in the girls 100 free (54.62).

Also procuring medals were Flower Mound’s girls 200 medley relay (second), boys 200 medley relay (second), boys 200 free relay (second), Kimmey in the girls 200 free (second), Young in the boys 200 free (second), Archer and Megan Seeman in the girls 200 IM (second and third, respectively), Sellers and Jerik Wong in the boys 200 IM (second and third, respectively), Wong in the 100 breaststroke (third), Rachel Purgerson in girls diving (second), Murphy in the girls 100 butterfly (third) and 100 backstroke (third), Spencer Woodward in the boys 100 butterfly (second), Regan in the 100 free (second), Kimmey in the girls 500 free (second), Arredondo in the boys 500 free (third), Sam Rice in the 100 backstroke (third), Emily Watson in girls 100 breaststroke (third) and Trevor Doyle in the boys 100 breaststroke (third).

Making their way to the stand from Marcus were the girls 200 medley relay (third), the girls 200 free relay (second), the girls 400 free relay (third), the boys 400 free relay (third), Stone in the girls 50 free (second) and 100 breaststroke (second), Carly Leonard in the girls 500 free (third) and Nathan Anderson in the boys 500 free (second).

The Farmers were paced by their boys 200 medley relay (third), boys 200 free relay (third), Deshawn Ball in boys diving (third) and Nathaniel Forbus in the boys 100 backstroke (second) and 100 butterfly (third).

The team used this week as a chance to continue to gear up for regionals Friday-Saturday.

“Our competition is Southlake Carroll, who won state last year,” Snow said. “They’re a great team. So we expect to finish in second on both sides. Our goal is to qualify four relay teams and four individual swimmers. We have a lot of kids who have great chances.”

At regionals, the winner of each event qualifies automatically with the next eight fastest times from throughout the state also moving on.
