Boys soccer: Marauders win Marcus Cup, Lady M’s win in Lewisville

Published: Friday, February 1, 2013 5:04 PM CST
The goals continue to pile up early in the non-district season for Marcus’ boys soccer team.

Entering Friday’s contest at Plano West, the Marauders had won six consecutive matches and averaged more than six goals per game in those wins.

In that stretch was a first-place finish last weekend at the Marcus Cup it hosted, including a win over rival and District 5-5A opponent Flower Mound in the finals, 2-0.

Marcus also knocked off Adamson (10-0), Plano East (3-0) and Fort Worth Eastern Hills (11-0) in addition to topping Garland Lakeview Centennial Tuesday (6-0).

Against Lakeview, Marcus scored early and often to take a 4-0 advantage to halftime. Haiden Stiles had a pair of goals for the Marauders, while Ryan Bigbie, Danny Blaney, Tyler Mouton and Victor Villareal chipped in scores. Alex Totillo set up the offense with multiple assists.

“We started very brightly,” said John Gall, Marcus head coach. “We actually could have scored about 15 seconds in but their goalie made a great stop. But we kept going at them and I was pleased.”

Defensively, Marcus’ goalies weren’t forced to make any saves.

“It was a quiet night back there for [the goalies],” Gall added.

In the Marcus Cup, the Marauders started each half strong against the Jaguars.

Logan Plunkett scored a “super goal” to open the contest before Dalton Nusz put Marcus in front, 2-0, in the opening minutes of the second half.

“I was pleased with how we played with composure and dealt with what Flower Mound was throwing at us,” Gall said. “And we have to play them two more times, so I am sure they were holding a little back. I think playing a rival like that, we were really able to settle down because we came right out and scored early.”

In pool play, Marcus cruised past its competition.

“Everyone played pretty well,” Gall said. “We had a solid margin against East, which is no weak organization.”

After their latest outbursts, Marcus has now scored 46 goals on the season. The Marauders only scored 28 goals all of last year.

“We still have a ways to go, but I think we’re showing we are more potent,” Gall said.

While the offense has been rolling, the club has also stacked up five consecutive shutouts.

“Early on, we made quite a few mistakes and were punished,” Gall added. “The kids took that to heart and are really focused on doing their jobs in the back. I’m pleased with how we’ve rebounded.”

The Marauders continue at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday against McKinney Boyd.

Girls soccer: Lady M’s roll in Lewisville

Marcus’ boys weren’t the only team to win their tournament as the Lady Marauders racked up a 4-0 record at the Lewisville Cup.

After blanking Arlington Lamar Jan. 24 (4-0), the Lady Marauders continued Jan. 25 with a 3-0 margin over Arlington Martin.

Last Saturday, Marcus cruised past W.T. White (8-0) before defeating Creekview in the finals (1-0).

Marcus had another date with the Lady Mustangs Friday (results not available as of press time) after Tuesday’s contest against McKinney Boyd was canceled because of weather.
