Wrestling: Jags finish third at State Duals

Entering last weekend’s Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association Dual State Tournament in Allen, Flower Mound head coach Steve Davis thought they would be involved in a battle for second with the host program a heavy favorite to win.
That’s exactly how it played out as the Eagles cruised to the title.
Unfortunately for Flower Mound, though, the Jaguars ended up on the same side of the draw and had to face Allen in the semifinals.
Flower Mound came up short, 57-10, but rebounded to finish third with a victory in the consolation finals against Morton Ranch, 48-22.
“We wrestled as well as we could have,” Davis said. “The kids did a great job and I’m very proud of their performance. I guess my only regret is that I didn’t feel the teams were seeded fairly and we were denied a chance to be in the finals. Morton Ranch beat the No. 2 seed rather comfortably and we ended up beating them by a solid margin in the consolation finals.”
Flower Mound’s other victories in the duals included Churchill (44-23), Del Valle (54-19) and Klein (43-24).
Dylan Akers went 5-0 in the tournament for the Jaguars.
“He had a remarkable tournament,” Davis said. “I really want to sing his praises.”
Davis was also pleased with the depth of his squad as he brought 28 wrestlers to compete in the 14 weight classes.
“In the first three matches I was able to substitute pretty liberally,” he said. “I got everyone in and almost everyone won a match. We weren’t really challenged in the first few rounds.”
The Jaguars continued this weekend at the Knockout Classic hosted by Jesuit (results not available as of press time).
“It’s probably going to be as close to a preview of the regional tournament as you’re going to get,” Davis said. “It should help us out and we’re trying to make a push to finish as the runner up at the state tournament and I think we can do that. I think some of our wrestlers will be able to place fairly high and I think our biggest competition for second might be Morton Ranch (behind Allen).”
Marcus was also in action recently and had multiple competitors earn medals Jan. 3-4 at the Viking Invitational Tournament at Arlington Lamar.
Brandon Litten (195) took first, while Lucas Lovell (106) placed second and Adam Weiss (138) earned third. In the JV meet, Dillon Mittan, Tristan Miller and Brendan Mitrisan won titles while Jake Prindle and Ismael Martinez finished second.
