Last week, hockey programs from Marcus and Denton County kicked off their respective seasons in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League.

The Marauders and Spartans have been slotted in the Varsity West and Varsity East divisions, respectively, but found mixed results.

Flower Mound, meanwhile, did not field a team this season.

Marcus opened its season on a positive note Sept. 27 securing a 4-2 victory over Coppell.

Following a scoreless first period, the Marauders cranked up the offense outscoring the Cowboys, 2-1, in both the second and third periods.

Peter Hatton opened the scoring with a power-play goal assisted by Connor Clay. Marcus took advantage of the extra man later in the frame as well, with Matt Brauch scoring an unassisted goal for a 2-1 lead.

In the third, Niko Jansen found the back of the net with helpers from Nicholas Orme and Michael Kobus before Clay tickled the twine to give Marcus a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Kamen Kessler picked up the win in net, stopping 20-of-22 shots.

Denton was not as fortunate in its first game as there was little the Spartans could do in a 9-1 loss against Plano East.

The Panthers took control early with a 3-0 first period before erupting in the second for five goals and an 8-0 lead.

Denton failed to get on the board until late in the third when Cameron Mixson scored on a goal assisted by Dylan DeRozario.

Stephen Degreiner started in net for the Spartans.
