Heart awareness event scheduled
Forestwood Middle School will host Don't Miss a Beat, a heart awareness month event, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. The event will include hands-on CPR training, AED training and will discuss the warning signs of cardiac arrest.

All Denton County Transportation Authority services and customer service will operate a regular weekday schedule on Presidents Day federal holiday, Monday, Feb. 18.
DCTA Administration offices in Lewisville will be closed in observation of the Presidents Day holiday and will open for regular business hours on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Police attend transit safety course
Lewisville Police supervisors and SWAT operators attended a class during February to help identify, prevent and respond to potential terrorist attacks.
The course, called "Terrorist Transit Tools and Tactics," is designed to address the technical aspects of detecting, deterring, preventing, mitigating and responding to a potential chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or explosive attack directed against a transit system facility. It included presentations and practical exercises requiring participants to demonstrate skills obtained during the course.
VAL hosts photography seminar
Jackie Haugen will exhibit her works during the month of February at the Lewisville State Bank which is located at 191 Main St. Lobby hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 9-6; and Sat., 9-1.
Ken Caperton is presently exhibiting his drawings at the Lewisville library through March 2. He will be at the library from 2-5 on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Darla Bostick has a solo show "Images of China" paintings and photographs, through Feb. 24 at the Irving Art Center in Irving.
"Denton County, USA" continues to run until Feb. 23 at the MCL Grand Gallery.
Acoustic Fridays take place every Friday at the MCL Grand.

Founder of The Heidi Group to address GOP Women
Founder / President of the Heidi Group and author, Carol Everett, will be the featured speaker at the Wednesday, Feb. 20 meeting of the Denton Republican Women's Club.
A former hardened pro-choice advocate, Group now uses her experiences and faith to help women who face reproductive crises with positive, life-affirming options. The Heidi Group partners with these women and their families to meet the needs of a crisis pregnancy with scriptural solutions. The Heidi Group's ultimate goal is to lead women and families to secure lives in Christ and economic stability.
Group has been invited to share her story on national broadcasting programs with Mike Huckabee of Fox News, Matt and Laurie Crouch of Trinity Broadcasting Network, Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, Point of View, Truths that Transform and Pat Robertson of the 700 Club, to name a few.
The DRWC will be meeting at El Guapo's Restaurant, 419 S. Elm in Denton. A Tex-Mex buffet will be available beginning at 11:30 and the program will begin at noon. Reservations are requested and can be made with hospitality chairman Jean Carter at 817- 296-5270.
The group is open to both men and women and any interested Republicans are invited to attend.
State Comptroller address Denton County Republicans
The state's Chief Financial Officer, Comptroller of Public Accounts Susan Combs, will be the program speaker at the Thursday, Feb. 21 monthly meeting of the Denton County Republican Party. She is expected to address the anticipated budget with which the legislature will be working during the current legislative session.
The DCRP meeting will be at 7 p.m., in the second floor community room of Medical Center of Lewisville, 500 West Main St.
Immediately prior to the meeting at 6 p.m., there will be a social hour for meeting attendees hosted by State Representative Tan Parker. Both the social hour and the meeting are open to all interested Republicans.
Combs was first elected as Comptroller in November of 2006 and in this office, she manages the state's treasury operations, monitors Texas' fiscal health, guides legislative decision makers by estimating state revenues and ensures state taxes are collected fairly and efficiently to fund vital programs and services for the people of Texas.

Teen Advisory Group: Thursday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. Join the library in helping create ideas to enrich the teen experiences offered at the Lewisville Public Library. Learn to work as a team and earn community service hours, too. Applications are available at the Youth Services desk. Meetings are held the third Thursday each month. Vista Ridge Mall hosts Go. Fight. Give. Blood Drive
On Feb. 23 and 24, Vista Ridge Mall will host a two-day blood drive that's part of Carter BloodCare's Go. Fight. Give. February promotion. Every person who donates will receive a free souvenir puck from the city's NHL team, the Dallas Stars and a pair of movie tickets.
In addition, donors can take advantage of a special offer and receive two mezzanine seats to a Dallas Stars game for the price of one. Every donor will also be entered to win other Dallas Stars' experiences, such as Luxury Suite tickets that are complete with complimentary food and beverages. The Go. Fight. Give. Blood Drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Donor registration will take place in center court and the Carter BloodCare donation station will be on the lower level near Macy's.
Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent's consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID. Donors are advised to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood.

Support group sets meetings
The Lewisville Widowed Persons Support Group is open to residents in Lewisville, Flower Mound and Highland Village Leader. It meets at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday morning at Sapphire's Cafe in the Nostalgia Antiques Mall located off Business 121 at Interstate 35E and every fourth Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Salerno's Restaurant, 3402 Long Prairie Road in Flower Mound. The group's goal is to be with people who have the same needs, to make new friends, and to support one another in widowhood. A few times a year, the organization holds a grief recover group for the newly widowed.

Candidate filing for May 11 elections underway
Candidate filing is currently underway for the next city of Lewisville general election, which will be held Saturday, May 11. Two seats on the city council are included on the May 11 ballot. Council terms are for three years. Those interested in becoming a candidate in the election can visit cityoflewisville.com and click on "Mayor and Council," or call city secretary Julie Heinze at 972-219-3404.
Lions club hosts fundraiser
On Saturday, March 2, the Lewisville Lions Club will host its annual Night at the Races
fundraiser at Celebrations event center.
The event will include a buffet dinner, horseracing entertainment, silent auctions and door prizes all evening.
Tickets are on sale for $35 and sold only in advance. All proceeds benefit the eye sight of children and others in need.

Adult kickball league kicks off in March
The city of Lewisville is starting an adult kickball league that will play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Registration will be held at the Parks and Leisure Services Administration Offices, 1197 W. Main St. through Feb 15.
Games will begin the first week in March. Team fees are $190 per team plus $4 per player on the roster; forms for registration are now on-line at http://www.cityoflewisville.com/index.aspx?page=513.

Hospice volunteer training by Ann's Haven VNA begins soon
Ann's Haven VNA needs hospice volunteers in Denton County who want to help terminally ill patients and their families.
A course in volunteer hospice care will be held over two consecutive Saturdays - Feb. 16 and 23 - from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ann's Haven VNA on 325 W. McKinney St. suite 101 in Denton. A light lunch and beverages will be provided.
There is no cost to attend the training, but reservations are required and can be made by contacting Ginny Hudson, Ann's Haven VNA Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at 940-349-5900 or hudsong@vnatexas.org.
Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team and help in many ways. Direct care volunteers provide emotional support, caregiver relief and assistance with errands.
Bereavement volunteers help comfort grieving family members, co-facilitate grief support groups and assist with monthly luncheons.
Caring companion volunteers stay with the patient and family when passing is imminent, remain with the family when death occurs, and assist the VNA nurse with pronouncement responsibilities.
Administrative volunteers help with clerical duties and other program support activities.
Citizen's Fire Academy accepting applications for 2013 class
The Lewisville Citizen's Fire Academy, the closest civilians can come to being a firefighter short of joining the department, is accepting applications for its 2013 class. The free 10-week program starts March 6 and will include instruction and training experiences in the classroom and in the field.
The academy, which is open to Lewisville residents age 21 and older, is designed for people who have a genuine interest in fire department operations and fire and life safety awareness. Classes meet every Wednesday evening, 7-9 p.m. All sessions are taught by fire department personnel.

Boy Scout Merit Badge Course offered
Lewisville Emergency Management Division will offer a free Boy Scout Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge Course on Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Central Fire Station, 188 N. Valley Parkway.
The course is available to Boy Scouts rank First Class and above. It is intended to assist current Boy Scouts with the information and skills needed to complete their Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge. Scouts will complete the majority of their badge requirements during this session. Some "at?home" work such as family disaster plans, troop mobilizations, and CPR/FIRST?AID information will not be covered and will be the responsibility of the Scout to complete.
Class size is limited to 30 students and the course is offered only twice a year.

VAL works donated to local hospital
Artists from the Visual Art League of Lewisville have donated children-themed artwork to the pediatric ward of the Medical Center of Lewisville Hospital. These pieces of artwork decorated the MCL Grand during the holidays.
The following artists donated works: Tina Alvarez, Lou and Barbara Barnett, Colleen Drew, Wanda Grice, Jackie Haugen, Kimberly and Lawson Loveland, Dulce Ruque, Tony Ulichnie and R'Lene Winters.
Visual Art League is one of six local groups receiving funding through a city of Lewisville grant program designed to foster cultural and fine arts in the community.

LLELA offers classes for home-schooled students
The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area will host classes on four days this spring specifically for home-schooled students. Students will participate in hands-on outdoor activities related to the day's theme. Each day will have separate sessions for 2nd-5th graders and for 6th - 8th graders. The fee is $12 per class, or $40 for the whole series of four classes.
The four dates include:
* March 28, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Winged Wonders (2nd-5th grade, 6th -8th grade)-LELA is home to over 280 species of birds, some only seasonally, others year-round. Don binoculars and discover these winged jewels as we investigate the ins and outs of migration, learn basic bird identification, and more.
* April 18, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Life in the Shade/Forest Ecology (2nd-5th grade, 6th -8th grade)-Observe decomposers at work, learn to identify North Texas trees, and study woodland wildlife in this introduction to forestry and forest ecosystems.
* May 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Insect Adaptation Lab (2nd-5th grade only)-Insects have a big impact on our world. While some are pests, most ecosystems couldn't exist without them. Discover the fascinating lives of insects and their amazing adaptations for survival.
* May 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Wildlife Manager for a Day (6th -8th grade only)-Students become wildlife biologists as they assess a site's potential for reintroduction of a species which was historically found in Denton County. Students survey vegetation, examine soil type, and collect other information necessary to decide whether the reintroduction should proceed.
* May 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Nature CSI (2nd-5th grade, 6th -8th grade)-Explore LLELA's aquatic ecosystems using dip nets, sampling trays, hand lenses, and other tools to uncover the many organisms that call the water home. Students learn that we also depend on water quality and quantity as citizens of a watershed.

Participants should bring a sack lunch and a refillable water bottle, and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Parents may choose to attend with their students, or may drop students off after signing a waiver. Younger siblings are welcome to tag along, so long as they are adequately supervised by a parent during class time. Classes will be rescheduled in the event of rain.
