Out with the old, in with the new: Camey Elementary gets a facelift with a new building scheduled to be complete in 2015

After two days of discussion, representatives from Lewisville ISD and engineering firm PBK presented their thoughts last week on what will become the new Camey Elementary.
PBK- which took the lead on Allen ISD's $60 million Eagle Stadium - has been working diligently with dozens of LISD teachers and students to include their requests in the design.
"It is a very powerful process," said Quentin Burnett, chief financial officer for LISD. "I can't go by a building without thinking that it is a tribute to a lot of effort by a lot of parties... This an exciting time and we hope that [those who participated in the design process] will see we have formed the future and have defined what the future is going to look like."
Among the top upgrades will be the districts effort to create a 21st century environment - including multi-use classrooms, advanced technology and an industrial, open feel of the building itself.
The new Camey Elementary will remain located at 4949 Arbor Glen Road, and the suggested designs will be presented to the school board at the March meeting. Once the process begins, construction is scheduled to be completed by September 2015.
The existing school, which has been in use for 35 years, serves more than 520 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. As is the case with older buildings, the school was seeing some wear and tear, something Camey Elementary Principal Livia Callahan is happy to see alleviated with the new building.
"Our building leaked often and it wasn't well insulated," she said. "But despite all the flaws we had in our building, it was a perfect place for learning. We are a family here and we looked at those as growing pains and we knew that one day they would come to an end."
Proposed plans for the school include an arched layout with two floors. The school will house about 750-800 students with extra classrooms available for each wing of classrooms, said Callahan, who added that the additional classrooms will provide much-needed flexibility.
"We had a voice [in the process], and I think that is so important for the teachers, the staff and the community," she said. We are so exited - we cannot wait."
The same process will also take place at Griffin Middle School, another aging school in The Colony. The design process for the new Griffin is expected to begin within the next two months.
