Slow filing: Two Rowlett council positions still have no candidates

Published: Thursday, February 14, 2013 5:46 PM CST
With four places up for election, so far only two candidates, Place No. 4 incumbent Michael Gallops and Place No. 2 candidate Tammy Dana-Bastian, have filed to run in the May 11 city election. Both candidates have been verified by the city secretary and are scheduled to appear on the ballot.

There are four positions that will be in the hands of the voters during the May election: mayor and Place No. 2, Place No. 4 and Place No. 6 city council representatives. The filing period is open now through March 1.

Place No. 2 is guaranteed to have a new face following the recent resignation of Donna Davis, who moved out of the city of Rowlett and was forced to resign last week.

The position of mayor is currently held by Todd Gottel. Gottel was elected mayor during a special election following the resignation of former Mayor John Harper. He ran unopposed. Prior to serving as mayor, Gottel was the council's mayor pro tem and Place No. 4 representative.

Ron Miller is the current representative for Place No. 4. Miller was elected during a special election in 2011. There are currently no candidates filed to run for the Place No. 4 seat.

Place No. 6 incumbent Michael Gallops, who has filed, is concluding his first term on the council. Gallops defeated Randy Mays during a runoff election in 2010. He is employed as a social worker. No challenger has filed for the Place No. 6 seat.

Both Gottel and Miller are also eligible to run for another term. The city charter limits council members to two consecutive three-year terms.

To file to run for a seat on the council, candidates may download the filing form online at www.rowlett.com or may obtain one by visiting the city secretary's office. To be eligible to serve on the council, the city charter states a candidate must be a qualified voter of the city of Rowlett, be a resident of Rowlett for at least one year and should not be in arrears in the payment of any taxes to the city of Rowlett.

For information about filing, contact the city secretary's office at 972-412-6115.
