Four-headed monster: Four Lobos averaging double figures in scoring

The Frisco Heritage boys basketball team will have a difficult time coming up with a defensive scheme when the Coyotes take on Little Elm tonight at 8 p.m.
It’s not just because the Lobos enter the matchup in first place with a 7-1 mark against District 9-4A counterparts. It’s primarily because Little Elm boasts four players averaging double figures on the season, with three Lobos scoring more than 15 points per game.
“It’s a coach’s dream,” said Rusty Segler, Little Elm head coach. “I don’t want just one guy averaging 25 points per game and no one else being in double figures. You can scheme to shut down one guy.”
“[Bridges] has been the No. 1 surprise of all,” Segler said. “He had a good year last year. But what he’s doing right now is crazy as far as I’m concerned. His hustle and effort are impeccable.”
Senior guard Devante’ Pullum and senior forward Biron Joseph are also averaging more than 15 points per game, with Pullum tallying 16.3 points and eight assists while Joseph has scored 15.3 points per game to go with 5.6 rebounds.
“I knew we had the potential to do it, but I didn’t know if we would,” Segler said.
Senior post Shaun Grant has helped Little Elm’s cause by giving the Lobos a scoring threat inside. The senior is averaging 10.3 points and eight rebounds per game, falling just short of a double-double average.
“I know I wouldn’t want to go against something like that as a coach,” Segler said.
The four-headed monster has allowed Little Elm to average 62.6 points per game while building an 18-6 mark during its first season in District 9-4A.
“I know the Frisco schools look down on us over here,” Segler said. “That helps us stay motivated. There’s also no team you can sleep on. You have to bring it every night in this district.”
Little Elm’s only blemish on its district slate this season is a Jan. 11 loss to The Colony. The team has since won three straight games heading into tonight’s showdown with Heritage.
“Obviously we don’t like that one loss,” Segler said. “But I hope it wakes us up a little bit.”
The Lobos now enter the final stretch of the regular season, with just five games remaining after Friday’s road contest against the Coyotes. Segler said he likes how his team is playing at this point in the year.
“I’m pleased with where we are right now,” he said. “We’re playing some good basketball.”
