Groselle a Senior CLASS finalist

The Citadel senior Mike Groselle, is a finalist for the Senior Class Award in men's basketball.

Groselle is a Plano West alum.

The award combines community, classroom, character and competition in its voting process.

Groselle excels in those categories.

The center is already 13th on The Citadel's all-time points list (1,238), third in total rebounds (686) and eighth in field goals made (501). Groselle has the highest field goal percentage in the 102-year history of the program and is the all-time leader in career double-doubles (25) and single season double-doubles (14 in 2011-12).

Groselle has done well off the court too.

The civil engineering major has a 3.693 GPA and holds the rank of captain on the team, which gives him captain rank in the Corps of Cadets.

Fan voting, which accounts for one-third of the final tally, is open at: seniorclassaward.com.

Fans in the Stands

The game is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Clark Stadium.

As host team, the six-time Class 5A State Champions hope to draw 2,013 fans to the match and create a party atmosphere with halftime youth soccer, cheerleaders and drummers in the stands.

Sidekicks playoff opener set

Following Saturday's regular season finale against the Texas Strikers, the Dallas Sidekicks will turn their attention toward the playoffs.

Waiting at the start of the Sidekicks' quest for the PASL Ron Newman Cup is a team they're all too familiar with: the Rio Grande Valley Flash. The Sidekicks and Flash will square off in a two-leg series that begins on the road at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Game 2 is Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. from the AEC. In the case of a tie, the Sidekicks and Flash will play a 15-minute mini-game following Game 2.

Dallas and RGV have played four times this season with the Sidekicks holding a 3-1 lead.

Revolution trims roster to 30

With the first phase of training camp in the books, the Texas Revolution has narrowed its roster to 30 players.

Opening camp with roughly 40 players vying for a spot on the 21-man roster, the first leg of cuts were released Monday. Among the names who failed to make it was Allen alum Nathan Dick, who was in competition to be the team's quarterback.

Players who made the first cut and have experience in the indoor football scene with the Allen Wranglers included defensive back Frankie Solomon Jr., wide receiver Ramonce Taylor and defensive lineman Prince Hickman.

The 30 players on the roster will be in action today at 7 p.m. from the AEC as the Revolution host the North Texas Crunch in a preseason scrap.

Anderson picks up offers to Navy, Rice

The recruiting of Plano West junior running back Auston Anderson continues to heat up.

Anderson received his first official offer Feb. 6, Signing Day for the Class of 2013, when Northwestern came calling. Add Rice and Navy to that list with the former offering Friday night and the latter Monday afternoon.

The interest in Anderson makes sense.

In his second varsity season, the 5-foot-8, 175-pounder was a first team all-district and all-Collin County selection after rushing for 1,156 yards and 13 touchdowns. Anderson, who also runs track, was the lighting part of the Wolves' multi-tiered rushing attack in 2012 as the team advanced to the regional finals for the first time in program history.

West already has one Class of 2014 commit as linebacker Lance Cottrell is pledged to SMU.

Jones ranked No. 1 in North America

Plano native Seth Jones' march to become the first defenseman taken No. 1 in the NHL Entry Draft in seven years took another step Tuesday as he was named the No. 1 skater in North America in the 2013 midterm rankings by NHL Central Scouting.

Jones would be the first American-born player chosen No. 1 since Patrick Kane in 2007.

Jones plays for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

Jones is fifth among first-year WHL players with 28 points in 33 games. He also has a plus-29 rating. Jones has piled up the points in the past month as the 6-foot-3, 208-pounder tallied six assists and a goal in helping the United States win gold at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The race for No. 1 is between Jones and Nathan MacKinnon (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League).

Nike Hoop Summit selects Randle

Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Julius Randle has been selected for the Nike Hoop Summit on Apr. 20 in Portland, Ore.

"Julius was obviously selected based on his ability to play basketball, but more importantly based on his character," said Chris Mayberry, Prestonwood head coach. "He has kept such a positive attitude dealing with the adversity of his injury and will continue to be selected for honors and awards because of his character."

The Nike Hoop Summit is one of the premier high school basketball showcases, pitting the country's top seniors against a World Select Team.

Randle is no stranger to such competition, capturing a gold medal on Team USA at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship last summer.

Planoite among Fan Cave finalists

Plano West alum Mina Park is among the 52 finalists for the MLB Fan Cave 2013 competition.

Park is representing the Texas Rangers, with a chance at moving to New York to watch every baseball game of the upcoming season while blogging, interviewing players and making creative videos. The competition's top 30 finalists are selected through fan voting, the original audition submission and ability to generate media buzz. Each finalist will be flown out to spring training in Arizona later this month.
