State Rep. Cindy Burkett (R-Sunnyvale) was appointed recently to the Investments and Financial Services, Local and Consent Calendars, and Transportation Committees, as well as the Select Committee on Federalism and Fiscal Responsibility. Speaker Joe Straus (R-San Antonio) released committee assignments to the members of the House.
"These committee assignments give me the unique opportunity to work on a wide range of issues important to the state of Texas, and I am ready to get to work. It is great for the interests of House District 113," Burkett said.
The Committee on Investments and Financial Services has jurisdiction over banking, savings and loan associations, credit unions, and the related state agencies.
The Local and Consent Calendars Committee is a procedural committee with jurisdiction over the placement on appropriate calendars of bills and resolutions that are local or will be uncontested and have been recommended by the committee of original jurisdiction.
The Transportation Committee is charged with all matters pertaining to commercial motor vehicles and their control, regulation, licensing and operation; the Texas highway system, including all roads, bridges and ferries; the licensing of private passenger vehicles to operate on the roads and highways of the state; the regulation and control of traffic on the public highways in Texas; railroads, airports, airlines and water transportation; as well as the related agencies of government.
The Select Committee on Federalism and Fiscal Responsibility will monitor the actions of the federal government, including federal legislation and regulations that direct or suggest that states take certain actions or pass legislation. The committee will also monitor issues related to federal sequestration and its impact on Texas.
Burkett said that thousands of pieces of legislation will be considered by the Legislature this session. It is the committee process that closely analyzes legislation before the bills reach the House floor to be voted on by the representatives. Taking an active role as a committee member will enable her to have greater input on a large number of bills.
Burkett is serving her second term in the Texas House. This past year, she was appointed by the Speaker to serve on the Energy Council, and most recently she was elected by her colleagues to serve as the vice chairman of the House Republican Caucus. Burkett co-owns Highline Enterprises, a company that operates several Subway sandwich franchises.
Burkett's local office is at 3200 Broadway, Suite 240, in Garland. She can be reached at 972-603-6743 or at her Austin office at 512-463-0464 or at P.O. Box 2910, Austin, TX 78768.
