Witness 'The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes' in action!
The very great grandson of Sherlock Holmes is trying to make it as a private eye, his mind filled with beautiful girls in dire straits who will be saved by his massive intellect. Unfortunately, great-grandson Sherwood is not quite up to his illustrious ancestor Sherlock, a fact pointed out to him by the descendant of Doctor Watson.
Thrust into a marvelous and complex murder mystery, young Sherwood tries desperately to rise to the occasion, but his brilliant solution is apparently no more than a humorous disaster. However, this great grandson still retains a bit of the classic brilliance attached to his name and, in an exciting and highly visual climax, he demonstrates the intent of the victim's last message and nails the culprit.
Showtime is 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23, at First United Methodist Church, 4405 Main St., Rowlett. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors 60-plus and children 17 and younger. Visit actortx.com for information.
Find a furry friend at adoptathon
Visit the Rowlett Animal Shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, for your chance to bring home a new pet during the shelter's Pet Adoptathon. All available pets will be at a reduced adoption fee of only $25. This includes vaccinations and sterilization if the pet hasn't already been sterilized.

Low-cost pet vaccine clinic available Saturday
Bring your pets up-to-date on their vaccinations during a low-cost clinic from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Rowlett Animal Services building, 4402 Industrial St.
Package prices are $37 for puppies and $39 for adult dogs, and $21 for kittens. The adult cat package is $23, or $39 to include the feline leukemia vaccine. Ferrets can receive a rabies shot, as well; for information, call 972-412-6219 or send an email to atraister09@gmail.com.
Grief expert to speak at VNA luncheon
Grief expert Fred Theobald will be the featured speaker at the Feb. 28 bereavement luncheon hosted by the Visiting Nurse Association.
Theobald will speak on "The Four Tasks of Mourning."
The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 3966 McKinney Avenue in Dallas. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made through Feb. 26 by calling 214-689-2633.
VNA's bereavement luncheons offer supportive company from friendly and understanding people to individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
Keep Rowlett Beautiful with a Great American Cleanup
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, join your friends and neighbors, young and the young at heart, to clean up designated areas around the lake and around the city of Rowlett.
Scout groups, school clubs, church groups, corporate teams, families, even neighbors getting together can sign up and later join the fun after the work with a Volunteer Thank You Lunch at the Pavilion at the Wet Zone with fun and bragging!

Keep Rowlett Beautiful hosting electronic recycling roundup
Are you ready to get space at home by getting rid of the old, outdated electronics to help make Rowlett even more beautiful?? Then bring those items to the Home Depot parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Items will be reused, recycled, or safely disposed of.
Acceptable items include printers, copiers, phones, faxes, computers, monitors, scanners, TVs, games, batteries ... and much more. Almost anything that runs on electricity or batteries, and their accessories, will be recycled. No Freon.

Writers, start your keyboards
The Rowlett Arts and Humanities Commission announces the 2013 Rowlett writing contest is here!
Youth in grades 1-12 and adults 18 and up are invited to submit works in three categories: Short Works (plays, essays, etc., of 15-30 minutes in length); Short Story (one to three pages, double-spaced); and Poem (one to two pages, double-spaced).
All entries must be typed and should be suitable for family viewing. No more than one entry is allowed per participant, per category. Each entry must be accompanied by a cover sheet that includes the writer's name, address, email, phone number, division and category; teachers submitting works for students may use the school's address and phone number. Do not include the name on the entry itself.
All first-place winners will receive a cash award (check) which will be presented at the Rowlett City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 18. The awards will be $100 for each adult category and $50 for each youth category.
Entries are due by Monday, April 29, and should be mailed or dropped off to the Rowlett Public Library at 3900 Main St., Rowlett, TX 75088.

Rowlett library offers a book club for everyone
Every Wednesday from 2-3:30 p.m., the Rowlett Public Library hosts a book club just for homeschool teens. The meeting offers a great way to socialize and share what you're currently reading.
Readers can also join the "No Page Unturned" club on the third Thursday of every month for a lively and entertaining book discussion, sharing what they're currently reading with the group. The meeting is BYOL - Bring Your Own Latte - and the library will supply the cookies! The club meets from 7 to 8 p.m.
