Boys basketball: Langley's hot shooting leads Flower Mound past Marcus

FLOWER MOUND - Flower Mound's boys basketball team hit 3-pointers on three of its first four possessions Tuesday night and never looked back as the Jaguars pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Marcus, 66-48.
The Jaguars (1-1 in district) led by nine entering the fourth, where they limited the Marauders (1-1) to seven points to seal the win.
The result snaps a 39-game district win streak in district for Marcus.
"It's been a while since we've had success in basketball and we're starting to taste it a little bit. But you have to act like you've been there before and be ready to play Friday."
Brandon Langley scored a team-high 26 points, including 7-of-15 from 3-point range, while Justin Gammill posted 15 with 12 in the first half on four 3-pointers to go with 10 rebounds. As a team, the Jaguars knocked down 13-of-26 from the perimeter.
"I thought our kids played well," said Clay Cody, Marcus head coach. "Flower Mound just shot lights out. I thought we played well defensively, I thought we played well offensively and I thought our transition defense was good. They hit 13 threes and we hit six. That's a big difference. And we were contesting their shots. Sometimes in basketball that's just how it goes. That's as well as they've shot it that we've seen and they shoot it well consistently."
Michael Wheeler paced Marcus with 13 points, while Jack Holden had 12 and Michael Mayhew and Aaron Steele scored 10 apiece.
The Marauders converted five threes of their own in the first half, but made just one in the final two quarters.
"That's never our plan, to shoot a lot from outside," Cody said. "We got caught up in it. We like to get the ball down low and get the bigs involved in the offense but we didn't do that. And when we did get fouled going to the basket, we didn't make our free throws. Those are points we have to get, not to mention how many of them were 1-and-1s."
Marcus shot 12-of-20 from the line.
In the fourth quarter, three consecutive long-range connections from Langley pushed a nine-point margin to 16 in seconds. The Marauders only mixed in a layup from Wheeler during the stretch.
"That was a nine-point game going to the last quarter and the untold story is that we held them to seven points in the fourth," Fossett said. "Everyone wants to talk about all of the threes, but the defensive end was where we won it."
Marcus continued at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hebron (results not available as of press time).
"I was real pleased with our effort and thought we did some good things," Cody said. "We felt like we stole one on the road Friday night (over Coppell) and that put us in a good position. Now we have to turn around on Friday."
Flower Mound went for a second consecutive win Friday against Ryan (results not available as of press time).
"We hit 16 threes in a game in Houston, but this was one of our best shooting nights," Fossett said. "That's what we can do. We can shoot it. When the ball is going in and we're getting stops on the defensive end it looks a lot better than it did Friday."
