Tennis: Déjà vu: Coppell tops Marcus in finals of district tourney

Published: Saturday, October 27, 2012 1:55 AM CDT
Three weeks ago, Marcus and Coppell's tennis teams squared off with No. 1 seed in the District 5-5A Tournament on the line.

Last Saturday, the squads again faced each other only this time the district title was up for grabs. And while the results on the match sheet differed, the final result was the same with Coppell coming out on top, 10-8, after winning during the regular season, 10-9. The Marauders were also leading in the final match on the court which could have created another 10-9 margin.

Despite the loss, Marcus managed to advance to this weekend's Region I Tournament in Abilene (results not available as of press time) for a second consecutive season by virtue of finishing as runner-up.

"It was an odd match," said Kelly Langdon, Marcus head coach. "We had four different matches that we won the last time we played that we lost this time and it's a credit to Coppell for stepping up in those matches. But the score was still very close and I think it really shows how similar our teams are."

Marcus was still in the mix after the doubles portion as the Marauders won 3-of-7 matches.

In girls doubles, the Lady Marauders received wins from Ludvine Varga and Molly Fisher (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Vanessa Phan and Nicole Wilson (6-4, 6-1), while Sid Bagaria and Jacob Villanueva (6-2, 6-4) won in boys.

"Sid and Jacob had a nice win at line three doubles for us," Langdon said. "They had lost a three-setter against Flower Mound (Friday in the semifinals) but bounced back nicely to beat a Coppell team that went undefeated in doubles during the round robin."

In singles, girls winners were Preethi Kasilingam (7-6, 6-2), Mira Shah (6-0, 7-6) and Wilson (6-3, 6-0), while Bagaria won in boys singles (6-4, 6-1) and Villanueva was in front in the third set.

"We probably had five different matches that we thought could have gone our way and made a difference," Langdon said. "There are always some matches here or there that switch up but to have everyone playing the same opponents and to lose four different singles matches was a bit odd."

Despite the loss, Langdon still believes his squad will head to Abilene as a confident group.

"We would have liked to go to regionals as district champs and a No. 1 seed," he said. "But this doesn't hurt our confidence. You hope the draw works out a little more in your favor but I don't think there are any other district champions that are looking forward to playing us in the first round."

On Friday, Marcus topped Flower Mound in the semifinals, 10-5.

"We played very well," Langdon said. "We did well in doubles to get up, 5-2, and we were hoping to be up at least 4-3 because during the regular season we won 9-of-12 in singles. So we felt really good about where we were at after doubles."

In singles, Marcus won five of the first eight matches to finish.

"I thought we did a good job," said Brad Wikse, Flower Mound head coach. "We had some areas where we did well and others areas where we didn't but we competed well. Marcus just came out and really put it on us in girls doubles. They were ready to play."

When the teams met during the regular season, Flower Mound led, 4-3, after doubles.

"It was a complete role reversal," Wikse added. "Maybe their personnel was just a little better than ours. They have some heavy hitters up top."

During the final two rounds of the tournament, Wilson and Fisher went 4-0 for Marcus.

In the first round Tuesday, Flower Mound topped Lewisville, 10-0.

"We had a good year and I have no complaints," Wikse said. "Even in our losses, we were right there with them. We'll keep practicing and try to get better and hopefully have a better spring. So far, it has been one of those things where we can't get over the hump in those close matches and we'll see if we can change that."
